Motor Mount Angle
« on: July 03, 2010, 12:14:08 pm »

Hi All

Newby qiestion I know but I am looking for some inspiration.

I am restoring a boat I bought on ebay a few weeks ago (Deans Marine Dufresne)and
I need to fit new motors.

I have taken everything out of the boat but the motor mounts sat on 2 hardwood
rails which are now not the right height or angle to line up with the shafts.

Question is how do I mark the right angle, should I take the old hardwood bearers out, hopefully without cracking the hull?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

It looks like you need to remove the bearers and make new ones. You seem to have a fair bit of room so it should not be to difficult.

You need to make sure your motor lines up with your prop shaft. If you can tape something round your coupling to make it rigid this will help.

I would agree with dicky.
You will need to remove the bearers.
This can be quite a tricky job but made a lot easier with the amount of access.
From your pics it looks like the bearers are mounted in epoxy resin.
If you have a sharp 1/2 or 1 inch chisel you can gently lift up an edge of the epoxy.
Place a bit of scrap wood inside the hull to spread the load.
Place this as close to the lifted edge as possible and start lifting the epoxy from the hull.
As you get a bit further in use another piece of scrap wood under the chisel.
Keep the load from the chisel on the scrap wood.

If the worst happens and you go through the hull. ( I have done this over 30 times and never have including planked hulls), P38 soon repairs it.

Many thanks for the replies guys.

Yes,the old bearers are mounted in epoxy and I thought they would
need to be removed,a job I am not looking forward to.

Oh well, needs must,it won't do itself I will just take it slow and hope.

I have a Minicraft multitool and some attachments so maybe it won't be that difficult.

They should come out in almost 1 piece if prized out, just leaving a little smoothing to do.
Please ditch the elastic band mounting of the motors.
