Hi,
Here is an engine that I built some years ago which is heavily influenced by A.W.Martin and although now no longer with us I believe has a son who still runs flashsteam engines .
I have found a site(
www.on the wire.co.uk) which has some great reading for those interested in flashsteam. it lists all the great guys of steam !
I was greatly impressed by Mr Martins engineering skill in building lightweight flash engines so this engine is virtually a copy and from memory it weighed 1.25 lbs.
The boiler is made from A. Raymans drawing which is available I think fro TEE publishing.
It has 9 x 1/4" o/d coils on the underside with the tubes flush to the inside of the boiler and then having a complete 360 deg turn and back up into the boiler with the end of the tube up in the steam space, there is 3 ft of super heat tube coiled down into the path of the burner flame.
Boiler was hydraulic tested to 400 psi with no problems, the engine runs at 150 psi and the burner easily can keep producing steam.
The engine runs free at 10,000 rpm but I have never had it in a boat.
Water pumps and oil pumps are all engine driven and the burner is fueled with Paraffin from a 60 psi tank.
Having found this site many years later I discovered that Mr Martin was a Scot born in Glasgow, my home town so it's a bit of a coincidence after all these years to find that we had a common interest.
George.
