Watercooling pick up?
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:30:25 pm »

I am going to build a 38" fast fishing boat (normal submerged drive) that wlil have 2 ESC that are designed to be watercooled. The motors are outrunners so not possible to wate cool easily, so I will just blow a fan over them if they get hot. The boat has twin rudders. Where do I fit the the water cooling pick up. What size tubing? Flat with the hull or protruding? I have a MFA water pump and there is plenty of free space in the hull so can use that if its a benifit.
Cheers

What I'm doing with the motor for the Aquabat is machining a metal collar to mount the motor in, this will also house the simmering to seal the shaft and will run outside. With outrunners the heat is in the armature (the magnets get cooled by the rotation of the drum) and this transfers into the bearing housing, machine a collar from brass to fit the bearing housing into and solder this collar to the stern tube (usually brass too)

The heat will transfer through the collar into the tube, which runs outside into the wet stuff.  Brass being an alloy of copper and zinc, this should draw the heat away from your motor quite well.

Water is by a large magnitude far better than air at cooling, so as you are surrounded by it you may as well take advantage of it.

do the outrunners have a static outer can? if so then you could water cool with a cooling coil, if not then cooling could be done with the mounts (see offshore electrics site)

Will the props be mixed, so when turning will one be slowing down, if so I would recommend a water pickup behind both props, one for each motor/esc, otherwise you will lose water cooling to one esc on turns,  If its not mixed, then you could just use one prop. Get the pickup directly behind the prop, as close as you can but with enough room to get the prop off!

OSE sell pickups, or you could use brass tube, bent to face the prop, up into the hull. Get quality 2.3mm silicon tube, (depending on the size you need)not fishtank stuff, thats not flexible enough, search on ebay, there is currently a uk seller selling approx 6 feet for £4.00ish, hope that helps :-))

I'll go for a single pick up in front of one of the rudder. I am not planning to run the motors independently. The out runners I am getting have the spinning can so can fit coils or water jackets. Anyway they may not get too hot as they I suspect they will be running well within their capabilities.
