help needed
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:57:00 pm »

hi all can anyone tell me how to solve a problem, the problem being when i sail my yorkshireman tug in a slight wind she tends to lean badly to overcome this would be a case of adding more ballast or is there another way.

regards dave.

Either more ballast or lower ballast.

Does she float on the water line ?

I have a yorkshireman and I have the same problem as you,
not solved it yet, even with extra ballast.

Dave ,,the way your ship is built will determine how to ballast her proper ..I had a very similar problem ,at the New brighton lake about 4 years ago ..you need a lot of patience ,,take a bit of advise of any/one who knows what there saying ,,and go along with a good aray of various lead ,and be prepared to move things around ,,at lake/side ,,and quietly .because if you get a load of ..do this  /do that  ..you will never solve the problem in time to enjoy an evening sail ..take it from me Dave ,,there are a lot of good meaning /but    no thanks ..Dave ..

I don't think you will solve it, two members at my club have the Yorkshireman and they do lean quite badly when turning. One member has tried fitting a keel and tried fitting lead to the underneath of the keel but the rear deck is awash and it still leans violently on turning. I think its because it is a quite narrow boat with a large air draft (the amount of boat above the waterline).

Try adding balast to the sides of the hul not dead center just above the internal waterline.

Sometimes this method works on keeping her stable in winds and wavy conditions, i had a similar problem with a smit nederland tug made by billings

Trick to fit balast up that high would be to make a box glue it to the internal wall & fill with lead or relocate the batterys to the same position with terminals facing up ...

give it a whirl .. it might work if it don't then im outta suggestions and it may just be one of them tugs u can only sail in calm days  >:-o

Dave.......Prophet is correct...look at my mud map below

top view shows the hull in water with on axis low down ballast & no wind or turning moment
middle view depicts wind or the turning moment & the result is the ballast on axis acts as a pendulem & rotates the ballast on axis
lower view depicts ballast pieces 3 & 4 at lower but outer extremities....the wind or the turning moment is the same  ...but the net effect is the wind must lift outer ballast piece 4 upwards  & push ballast piece 3 down to get the hull to list

Does the real tug lean over? I am sure some must, is it a case of the model, modelling behaviour of the prototype??

I don't know I am a newby, but just curious!

Roysterer and Rollicker had a bad rep for stability as I remember from my Grey Funnel Days

Hi mersey dave.
What prophet and dave 301 are talking about is the equivalent to bilge keels/stabalisers as used on warships to counteract
                 rolling.
Some models are what is called "tender" ie the can roll like a pig on wet grass, due to top weight.  Reducing weight by
replacing white metal fittings with resin or plastic reduces rolling.

Having the batteries laid flat instaid of vertical aslo pulls weight lower down.    You could glue clear plastic over the stern
freeing ports to keep the water out but still retain the look of them being open.

                                                                 cheers Frank

Had the yorkshireman out this morning, the wind was blowing at aprox 15-20 mph. I set the ballast out like derek kindly shown and the result was a lot more stable in both side wind and when turning hard. So based on my findings i give a big thumbs up and a well done to the member who posted this idea followed by dereks pictures.

Many thanks.
                   Regards Dave.
