PBM Type 42 destroyer kit?
« on: August 03, 2010, 05:25:13 pm »

Did PBM ever produce a kit of a Type 42-class destroyer? I know they made a County-class destroyer and a frigate (can't remember what class).
I just bought a HMS Sheffield hull cheap on eBay, it is light plywood box construction like the PBM kits and the bulkheads + hull sides have numbers printed on the inside surfaces, suggesting a kit. It also has the remains of waterslide decal markings for the hull number + ship name.

The hull is a bit under 3' long which scales out at very close to 1/144 - if I remember correctly the PBM County kit was the same scale.

Hi Edward. I think the County Class was H.M.S Devonshire and the other two models were a Leander class frigate  and H.M.S Sheffield. Other models in their range were a Victorian Paddle Steamer, Oil Rig Supply Ship Forties Shore and Tug Alfred.  I cannot think of any other models PBM made. Was Sheffield a type 42

HI Edward I understand H.M.S Sheffield was a type 42.

Stan - take your pick - the last three Sheffields were in this order, a WWII cruiser,
a type 42 destroyer, sunk in the Falklands War and finally a batch 1 type 22 which was transferred
to Chile as the Almirante Williams

PBM also used to do a Victorian Steam Yacht, nice thing it was too.

Thanks - the hull is a Type 42 so definitely the PBM kit.

Could anyone recommend a good set of plans for an early/Batch 1 Type 42? (not necessary Sheffield)

Bought the same kit in late 70's, lost the hull in a house move but still have the instructions if anyone needs a copy.

I ordered the Jecobin HMS Exeter plans last week, they arrived yesterday - at around £10 the 1/192 plans are quite good value for the amount of detail shown.

Bought the same kit in late 70's, lost the hull in a house move but still have the instructions if anyone needs a copy.

Many thanks for the offer - as this is going to be a scratchbuild (mostly using styrene plastic) on the kit hull, I don't need the the kit instructions to build it, though I'd be quite interested to see them to get an idea of what the original kit was like!
Do you still have any of the plastic mouldings, etc. from the kit?

2. can you post in other boards OK?

Hi Edward.
here is a shed load of Exeter info so I am expecting to see a museum standard quality build.. :-))
(its the usual click on the pix to enlarge)

                                   cheers Frank

Thanks for the links - will check them out later.
I won't be starting the build imminently (need to finish some other projects first) but fairly soon. I'll try and make it as "scale" as possible (above the waterline at least!) though museum quality is unlikely, everything will have to be scratchbuilt as there's not a lot of post-war RN stuff available in 1/144 (though I have some 1/128 scale etched brass railing stanchions and ladders which should be usable)

Don't seem to have any problems with posting in this thread... haven't tried other boards yet.

 Hi Edward.
RE: need to finish some other projects first...dont we all.. I am not expecting the finish to be museum quality
that was just a little dry hummour.. after such a large post

There must be some 1/144 kits about plastic or other wise you could rob for parts.

                                            cheers Frank

Edward
I have some of the original mouldings if they would be of use.  Includes the gun turret, boats, liferafts.

I have both Leander frigate and County Class destroyer PBM kits, both still to be made.

Hi,
The PBM County Class Destroyer was H.M.S. Glamorgan, I still have that model which I bought in 1979.
