One of the best (and free) photo manipulating programmes is Irfanview.

http://www.irfanview.com/

This will handle virtually any photo file, resize -  to any size you want, alter to differing formats as required, scan and print, create slideshows, play movies and sounds and much more.

Try it - its FREE.

I use Computpic Pro - http://www.photodex.com  for sorting, arranging, renumbering, quick fixes, red eye, sharpening, etc etc. I like Compupic Pro as it sores a database of every photo it looks at so the next time you look at that directory of photos, it's instantaneous, ie. it doesn't have to rescan each picture to show it, it just scans to any changes

For adjusting, manipulating, reworking photos I use a venerable copy of Paint Shop Pro version7!!!!

For creating the galleries on Mayhem I use Arles. http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/overview/index.html

Hi all
Been a while...finally mange to chase myself to buying a digital camera.

Bought the Canon Powershot 720is and I find it great. Although there is a 100 pages of how to use it and instructions I am on my way to enjoying this nice little camera.  O0

Didn't realize its been almost a year since I made the inquiry.   :D Thanks again  for setting  me in the right direction.

Now for a dogs "xxxxx" printer to go with it.  Its got to have spell check though l.o.l

Hi All
I've got Paint Shop Pro which is for adjusting and repairing pictures.

Currently I find with the Kodak software the printing of picture is a burden. never get the offer of a one of 6x4 or 7x5 photo its either x 2 or 4 photos at a time.

With the choice of a new camera coming up.I am also looking for a printing system where you can just look at the photo(s) I want and print them at one at a time to the size I wish.

I feel that all my picture are on disc and have to show people them by using the computer. Call me old fashioned but I like to have some photos the old way printed out.
If you are used to Paint Shop Pro then stick with it (NOT version 10..it's crap...8 or 9 are good). PSP will do everything that Photoshop will do at a quarter of the price. Seriously, if you get used to one programme it can get very confusing when you change. Read the manuals and then stick to your choice...may take you a couple of years or so, but so do all the other "high end" things.
If you want multiple (different) images on one sheet then click on "file", then run down and click on "Print Layout", then move up a bit and click on "open Template"....then you can print out any number and sizes you wish to do. Sounds awkward, but its a doddle.

For actually printing photos at any size and exactly where I want them I use MS Publisher.  I can insert any captions that I want at the same time.
There are other page processors about, but I am used to Publisher, and like BY says, once you are used to a program, you need a really good reason to change.
PSP is good for editing and it has a nice browser, but mine is an ancient PSP5 which was a mag freebie mmphmmp years ago.  Does its job OK, though.

I've got psp v7.01.

Can't complain about it but was thinking it would be nice to have a printer that just prints photos.

My old printer/scanner/photocopier is the Epson Stylus CX3200. its still going strong but you can't get support now for it.

Will look at the Canon range to suit the camera I have and see what turns up.

Cheers again mates

hi there have a hp 3210 printer and get relay good results from it. I think hp have brought out a newer model. Any way my printer takes 7 inks it sounds a lot but there are advantages. 1 you will use some inks more than other to make up the required colour . The more inks in your printer has the less you waste IE mine use yellow a lot so that gets replace more that red. On some printers they share inks so when one gos empty you throw the lot away, expensive. 2 As for cost well 7 inks at PC world £35 not to bad. john

Ive had Epsom printers from BBC B days and was happy with them prob had about 15 in all I like to keep up with new technology all the last ones have been photo printers and I have been happy until the last three printers have all had problems and been very noise , I was after a network   printer and I decided to have a change and so got a HP photosmart 2570 about 10 months ago and have been very pleased , the picture quality is very good and its the first all in one I have had and its so easy to copy bits of plans for patterns it only has 2 cartridges and this was the only thing that put me off, I think there is anew oneout now and it has 6 separate inks
and is so quiet, next one will be a hp

My tuppence worth - unless you are going to print photos quite regularly DON'T buy a photo only printer, use the supermarket or shop "Print your own" machines, MUCH cheaper!.... and the ink hasn't dried up when you need it!

The EpsonStylus PHOTO R300 is not a photo only printer, it is a printer that does photo prints as well.  O0

I meant to add to my last post that the 3200 doesn't enlarge or reduce, which at times is a pain in the bum. As this 3200 is still in good shape I'll just have to go to the printers for alterations to plans.  >>:-(

Just a wee bit too much to buy a new one to get this function. It will be a thing that i will be looking at when buying a new one.

Hi Martin (our leader)  :)

Never thought of using supermarket or shop "print your own" i am a little behind on this, enlighten me about this.please.

Hi Seaspray,

At local Boots you can walk in put your smart card (if thats the right word) into the machine. Select waht photos you want printed pay your fee and in a few minutes out they drop.

As to printers I have a HP Photosmart 3210 printer, scanner, copier, which as enlarge facility. Paid less than £150-00p some 14 months ago and I have to say I have been delighted with its performance.

Another way is to put them on a cd and hand it over it's cheaper (about half price) and you collect the next day . also jesops do the same I find it better as you do all the composing at home and you haven't got some one behind you humming   >>:-( as I had last time I waited for them , but I did have 150 to do.... :embarrassed:   aldi do a  service where you up load them and they send them out so do a few others .

I'll look into  that as I have  come across somewheres saying that printing photos yourself can cost as much as 28p. each.  :(

In my view it's simply not worth using your own printer to print out standard photos. Putting them on a CD and taking them to Jessops or similar is much cheaper, much less time consuming and the printing process and inks are better than the ones used in your printer.

Your own printer is however very useful for printing out large photos, 10x8s for example, which are relatively expensive if you have them done commercially.

Hello All,

Getting back to the cameras, has anyone tried or bought any of the Panasonic Lumix cameras?
I like the idea of Leica lenses but I noticed the comments on the sensors being as or more important than many of the other features.

The bigger the lens the more the light gathering power and the more versatile the camera. Also an optical zoom is much better than a digital one which simply enlarges the middle of the picture.

Obviously, sensors are important but so is the software used to drive them so you need to look at the whole package. Something else you need to particularly look at when choosing a digital camera is the response time between pressing the button and the camera taking the shot. This can be quite appreciable with many compact cameras and can make it very difficult to take pictures of moving subjects. A digital SLR or top end compact will normally have an almost instantaneous response. I have a Canon SLR and a Nikon compact and use both regularly.

fudji finepix s9600, video quality, low light fotos, where I would normally have to use flash and the power charge lasts forever
Highly Recommended.

Tony

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ 18 (its only just become available in this country).  Mainly for the zoom capabilities. It is a fantastic camera. OK - I am not very knowledgeable on photography, but a camera that can be set to do everything automatically and yet have such a range of adjustments for the expert seems terrific to me.

It has 8 million pixels and an optical zoom of 18x . Adjust it down to use only 5 Million pixels and the optical zoom is 23X - go further down to 3 million pixels and the opical zoom is 28.7.  And the camera has built in image stabilization ( needed at these magnifications)

Examples of the 18X zoom are shown in the attached photos.

Lovely photos Don, Thanks for the info.

The Lumix range seems to fit the bill, especially since I've got to buy 3 (Son, Daughter and Me!)
