Just an idea.....how about a sort of friends re-united page?

I was just looking through the members list looking for someone that I worked with on London Transport about 15 years ago who made model boats (I wasn't at the time, although I had before and we talked about it a lot) but it occurred to me that we all use an alias.

Now I know this maybe means more work (for Martin) but is there (or have I missed it) a way of (looking for or sending a message to a person by their real name) as I'd like to get back in touch with this person.

It could be up to them whether they want to respond or not as in the "friends site"  but it's just an idea, what do you think?

Why do people on this forum use an alias? A lot of the time (in answers etc.) they are referred to by their real names. So what's the point. Bryan Y.

With me its very simple.
It was my first Hotmail address. I use this on every other forum, modelling or otherwise.

I would think it's a mixture of security, interest, intrigue and a bit of fun.

"Cosmic Crusader" is a bit more glamorous than 'Gary Morris'

Usually, user names have to be unique hence the aliases. Otherwise how does the system differentiate between two Karl Marx?

Hi
With me its easy to.
Born Harold, so called that until I left New Zealand, In the UK referred to as Harold & Harry (most of the time, the other names wouldn't get past the censors), In Australia always Harry, and in my adopted home of Viet Nam, simply called Kiwi, by everyone.
So Kiwi it is, although on some forums its vnkiwi.
The internet just can't seem to get its hands around peoples real names,javascript:void(0); hence the alias's, which translate into uniquel numbers, which the old computer can get its teeth into.(shades of big brother watching as Wells would have it.)javascript:void(0);

Kiwi
javascript:void(0);

I think you need specific software to do this sort of thing - like Fiends Reunited (sic)

Still, I suppose we could start a "Contacts" topic where you could post things like "Anyone know whwere XXXXXX is?"

A "looking for" page was more what I had in mind, leaving it up to the person in question whether they wanted to respond or not.

I thought about it afterwards and I suppose it would have limited appeal, plus I'm not sure the bloke I was looking for would be on line anyway.

Friends Reunited does have a work place section I think. Maybe you could find him there

It has been done before on here.

People have found long lost buddies on this site.

They have simply posted something in the Chit Chat section, and recieved a response.

No need for a special section.
