Sailing Water/Club in South Manchester
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:47:22 pm »

Is anyone aware of any model boat clubs (scale electric/sail) operating in the South Manchester area?  I'm aware of Etherow but that's a bit far for me to travel on a regular basis. I've been told that there used to be a club operating at Platt Fields park but I'm not sure if that's still going. I've seen reference to Trafford Model Boat Club at Sale Water Park which would be ideal for me, but webside redirects to British Model Powerboat Racing Society so it may not be the club for me. Anyone any wiser?

As a relative newcomer to the area I need somewhere to sail. Previously from Batley in W. Yorks and was lucky to have Kirklees MBC on my doorstep!

Is this what you are looking for? Taken from the MPBA website, and as far as I know they are still active. Let me know if there's a problem and I'll see if the Membership Sec has an update.

SOUTH MANCHESTER M.B.C.
Interests: Scale.
Contact: Steve Booty, 26, Amberwood Drive, Baguley, Manchester, M23 9ND. Tel: 0161 998 1204.
Venue: Platt Fields Park.

MODERATORS - that phone number is on the MPBA website so I can't see any problem in posting it here :-)

Could you travel to North Manchester? the Bury Club have an excellent lake, clubhouse and parking. They have over 100 members from throughout the Manchester/Northwest area. No IC powered craft.

Seriously though...  The lake in Platt Fields has had some problems with blue-green algae over the last couple of years, but (touch wood), it hasn't been as bad this year and I've seen the model boats out regularly on Sunday mornings.

Thanks for that Plasticmonk. I wasn't sure whether the club was still operating as the last events listed on the website diary were for 2003!
