MFA motors?
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:55:42 am »

My little Graupner Police launch has a small MFA RE385 motor installed. It achieves scale speed at a push, just about.
I'm looking to put something a little beefier in and was wondering if the MFA Torpedo 400 would be suitable? Or are they basically the same? The boat chugs along and ploughs through the water at the moment, mainly due to the centre of balance being too far forward (I bought it ready built) which I'm addressing at the moment, but I would like to see a bit more oomph if possible, I have a spare 700 BB Turbo but I think it may be a tad too much....... {-) {-)

Nige,
I have been on the MFA site and cant see a 400 motor.
But these are usually high revving motors.
Something like a 545 would be more suitable for what you want, but depends if you have the space and height available to fit.

This is the one you're thinking about. It's a 3-pole motor and goes like greased weasel-pooh on 7.2v. The 385 is a 5-pole motor and is really best on 12v - and that's in a slow model.

The Torpedo motor is on ebay HERE

My RE385 is 6 - 15v D.C and it's part number is 457-RE385

Now I'm wondering if I should simply put a 3 cell lipo in as I've been using an 8.4 NiMh battery.......

Change the 5 pole chugging motor to a same size 3 pole spinner, run the motor on its rated voltage (i.e. look for an 8.4 volt motor), maybe use a smaller prop or one with fewer blades, sort the centre of gravity, then treat with caution.

Thanks for the advice, I'm still on a steep learning curve..... :-)
Is that Torpedo 400 a suitable faster replacement?
