Hi all, I have a confession. I'm 46 and just discovered the joys of RC boats.

There, I've said it!!

I bought a cheapo RTR Joysway Magic cat last week, it's small, fairly nippy on a flat pond, the radio gear is crap but I love it!!

The wife doesn't understand, but I can live with that. 2 friends also bought these boats and we are having a real larf!!

The problem is, I've already got upgradeitis mainly the radio gear. Anyone know of anything reasonably priced and with a small rx and ESC to give a decent range (you get bored of 20m very quickly)

Anywhoo, nice to be here :)

Stig,

Welcome aboard the good ship mayhem where you will get a variety of answers to your questions - some useful, some not, some flippant,  none rude - plenty with humour :}

Who is the Stig anyway? :-))

try this for upgrade tx and rx systems, you will find that most are swapping from 27-40 mhz to the new 2.4ghz sets removing the need for crystals to be used and they give a greater range

http://www.giantcod.co.uk/gianitcod-24ghz-4channel-mode2-transmitter-p-403779.html

£30 Delivered can't go wrong with that!

in regards to your esc depends on the motor draw will depend on the esc needed but usualy your looking at a around 20A esc's

search around for mtronics as there water proof, but check on the giant cod website on there range of esc's (linked above)

hope it helps :-))

The Giantcod site only shows brushless ESC's.
What motor(s) are in your boat?
The spec sheet and spares show a 180 size brushed motor.

Thanks for the replies, I've looked at the Giant Cod TX / RX combo, but feel the receiver is a little large. The Planet 5 combo looks more suitable with the 6g micro RX any views on this?
The current ESC is 5A, but would be looking at 15A to accomodate future motor upgrades and yes currently it's a 180 brushed motor (poss upgrade to Xtreme 180SE brushed)
If, as I suspect, the bug has bitten hard, a new boat may arrive in a couple of months. Stilll liking the micro size, but maybe a little larger say 18" or so, but any radio upgrade will be easily transferrable to the newer beastie :)

i run with the planet 5 its just as good as the giant cod but the receiver is smaller by the looks of it, the planet 5 has 5 channels on the TX and 6 on the Rx, there was a recent discussion on trying to use the 6th channel on the Rx but i haven't seen any replies to how to get it running, howes models is selling the planet 5 TX/ Rx set for £47
