Help with Big CVN Enterprise?
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:43:46 pm »

Via email to Mayhem...

Hi Martin,

...... I write because what I'd really like is a 'huge' aircraft carrier kit cut for me. I was in process of arranging one some time ago but the guy turned out to be a crook. Your site seems reputable enough, so I going to try again. When I say huge, I mean a flight deck cut from a sheet of 4'X8'X1/8" ply wood. I plan to embed a solar panel in the deck and although not a scale feature, it’ll be good enough as the model itself will only be 'stand way off semi scale. I'd like it styled on the lines of the 'Big E  US CVN Enterprise.

I will need the frame, superstructure, other important parts and plans cut; planking and deck I'll get myself. I think four of the largest motors available should be enough power. 4, five inch, five bladed props and a hull full of car batteries should make for quite an impressive model-yes? If eight feet is too ambitious, I'll take six feet; still an impressive bit of work.

If at all you can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

Calvin.

Sounds a bit strange, he does not even a plan but he wants the wood cut out????? He does not even know how big it will be but wants to put 4 x 5" props into it and fill the hull will car batteries!!! It might even be 8 feet long, if not 6 feet long.

Huh?

Hi Calvin,

Congrats first of all for attempting what will be a fantastic model, to save u both time and money, does it have to be scale? If you are prepared to spend a few days with the graph paper u could design a STEALTH carrier composed entirely of flat ply panels which you could take to a local manufacturer with a 3-axis CNC router who will produce the hull, internal structure, deck, tower etc as a flatpack for u to build and then add commercial fittings to taste...sure the company may charge a bit but the a few sheets of 6mm ply and 1 sheet of say 12mm for internals ex hardware store would be economical and give you a head start on the build AND a striking appearance...best wishes my friend whichever cat-skinning method you choose! :-))

Regards,

Ayrshire Andy
