Plans from the National Maritime Museum - The Denny List
« on: September 25, 2010, 11:14:16 am »

I see a reference to the Denny List from Colin Bishop in the thread about TSS King George V ( now there was a beautiful ship....)
I'm posting this as a topic because I think other members might be interested in the answer.
I've tried unsuccessfully to find information about drawings of the 1953 Denny built car ferry Arran, on the NMM website.
Could Colin (or anyone else) point me to where I can find details, online, of what drawings the NMM have, what they cost etc.
Best Wishes
Douglas

Contact The Model Steamer Club of Glasgow, as their members between them have plans for almost all clyde steamers of all vintages.

No, the Maritime Museum don't currently list Arran. Denny yard No: 1470, but she has a full entry in the Denny List which was published in 1976 and indicated that a fairly comprehensive set of plans were available plus 12 photos. The online NMM list is obviously not comprehensive as it doesn't seem to list any of the Denny plans I tried at random including those of the mv Southsea/Brading that I have actually got!

You may need to make direct contact with the NMM for the information but it might be cheaper to follow up Snowwolfair's link above.

I have volumes 2,3 & 4 of the Denny List which commence from 1886. There are some lovely designs in there!

Model Boats magazine published a good Jim Pottinger plan of the mv Bute not long ago. Bute was of course built by the Ailsa yard to a similar if not identical design as Arran.

I built a model of Arran from the old Vic Smeed plan as a boy but this was simplified and the hull shape was not to scale.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Snowolflair and Colin for the information. I have the Bute plan but am looking for just a wee bit more detail. The Model Steamer Club looks favourite for now
