Speedline Tamar Lifeboat
« on: September 30, 2010, 04:26:01 pm »

I need some advice/help from you "experts" out there re Tamar build.

The Y-Boat "garage" .   I take it the moulded garage piece is glued to the deck to hold it in place?

SA10 consists of the two ends of the garage, but where do the other two pieces of SA10 fit?

re Page 37 of Adrians Instructions, the center piece made out of 0.25 Styrene and described as Rubber Bridge piece, where does this fit?

Where do the Rudder Access covers fit?

None of this is obvious on the drawings

Has Adrian issued his new CD of full instructions yet?

Thanks

a struggling Ken !

Hi there, my friends building Speedline Tamar at the moment and has not long ago done the Y boat storage area. He's away until Monday but I'll ask him if he can get in touch. I've found these photos on the web of the storage area, don't know if they're any use?? Dave  :-)) :-))

Hi KenP

Suggest you get in touch with Phil Locke, he's a fountain of knowledge with all Lifeboat matters, particularly with regard to the Severn and Tamar.

Russ,
That's looking good and really helpful for my build, thanks.

What is behind/under the blue foam in the aft quarters at the sides of the Y-boat well?

Sandwich bags with sand in.....ballast.  I find it easier to place and move around to get the correct waterline..

Thanks

Thanks you guys, got my answers now.

I guess if you don't go for an opening back then the " rubber" piece is not needed as it's only there to provide a bridge between the floor and the opened door.

Quite a model to make, isn't it.

Adrian tells me there is a lead time of 8 weeks from his supplier before he can get hold of the metric equivalent of the 12BA nuts and bolts

You've got to get hold of him first! Lack of communication is what has put me off a 1/12 Severn or Tamar, shame really... {:-{

I found a good supplier up north for the bolts, got fed up in the end of lack of communication from Speedline.

For a kit that costs £990 nobody should be having to chase up missing parts and instructions. Nothing should be missing, everything should be properly checked before it's dispatched. Just not good enough these days... >>:-( >>:-(

When i was ordering the various packs for my trent, there was loads missing and he didnt seem to know what should and shouldnt be in the etched brass packs etc.. In the end, Mike P whos building it sorted it out. Yes i also had communication issues.

He doesnt produce his hulls either, models by design do, or atleast they do for the trent. Again just doubles the price. Same with the brass rod pack, doubled price..

As a matter of interest is there anyone out there that has had a full set of build instructions to the Tamar yet?

Russ,
I thought I had a full set of .pdf instructions, as much as they are, but Adrian told me when I bought my Tamar that a new, complete set were being written and I would have them as soon as they were finished. That was February! No sign yet. I've had several issues where the instructions didn't match the etched sets and I've had to chase Adrian up for an answer. I'm stuck on the forward escape hatch at present as the instructions show more parts than supplied in my kit. Adrian says the parts are right not the instructions. I'm beginning to treat it as an aided scratch build rather than a kit.

Bill,
I'm nearing the end of my Y boat, and it is looking very neat. It's a nice kit. I've not used moulded styrene parts before and so it was a bit daunting to start with, but it goes together well. At least Adrian supplies good instructions for this kit!
One tip; when you seal the top and bottom halves of the hull together and fill the joints, the tubes become air-tight. When you then sand them down with wet and dry, using warm water like I did, the air inside expands and splits the join! Second time around I drilled a small vent hole at the bow, low down inside, now hidden by the spray cover, to solve the problem.
It's just getting it's last coat of paint. I'll post pictures as soon as it's done.

Just to let you know that the reason for the BA bolts taking so long is that they are not standard BA bolt but are reduced in head height so that they look more scale like. The lead time for them is actually eight weeks (though they have taken sixteen weeks so far) and they are made in Switzerland.  Standard BA bolts can be got from many sources but not with the slim heads and not on brass. A nut and bolt just 3/8" long costs upwards of £0.27 a set.  Mine are correct (and half the price). Since they are only used to hold the hand-railing support brackets to the kick-boards, perhaps I'm being a bit fussy. I don't think  so though.

Latest on 12 BA nuts and bolts is that the company who were making them have gone out of business and have my 50% in their pocket.
I give up!
I have bought some steel nuts and bolts that actually look fine but they are expensive again. Since they go in the kit anyway, cost increase is my problem I guess.
