With apologies the Bryan's fantastic  Nautical "Strange but True!" http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8808.0
....but in my best "Uncle Albert" impersonation...

Many years ago I was sent to Canvey Island to fix a photo copier;
1. The address was strange and
2. I don't fix photo copiers!

Anyway I went along to the Canvey Island oil terminal and asked for (something like) 'Measrsk Terkol'.

"Oh that will over on birth 37."
"Er, OK." Thinking there must be another smaller office quayside.

"This is birth 37 isn't it? Can you tell me where ’Measrsk Terkol' is please?"
A strange look come across this burly dockers face.
"Turn round mate."

"That a big ship! But where is the  'Measrsk Terkol' office?
Even stranger look crosses the dockers face.

"Look at the writing on the blunt or sharp end mate!"

'Measrsk Terkol' turns out to be a huge four tank LNG carrier.

I went on board, found the crew, then the captain, finally the photo copier and fixed it.

"Pleased to meet you captain, I've never met a serving Captain before."
"Oh, there one on nearly every ship."
"Ha ha,. (embarrassed). I build model boats, can I have a look around?"
"Sure. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING."

As the ship was unloaded so was sitting very high in the water, the tanks were not visible quayside.... but up on the bridge it's very strange site the first time you see it! At first I couldn't understand what I was looking at but as the bridge was deserted, I found lots of information about the ship and it capabilities. Obviously safety is a MAJOR issue and has banks of ‘four gauges’ (tank pressures) in many location throughout the ship.

With the bridge deserted, the temptation to touch things was almost unbearable! Big meaty throttle levers (Engine Telegraphs?), ships wheel and all sorts of gauges and controls that would keep me happy for days! The intriguing item however was the radar. There was a very 'juicy' red switch next to the console mark On/Off, I had to put my hands in my pockets to prevent me interfering!... Are you allowed to turn on a radar when birthed? I had visions of, "Disaster at Canvey island oil terminal today! Idiot activates radar on LNG carrier when birthed!"

.... I left the terminal thinking, ‘I think I'd like to spend 6 months at sea......’

Sorry David , can't help with plans!
 :embarrassed:

You can active the radar along side, they will turn it off when there doing cargo and just before they leave they turn it back on, I worked on cheimcal tankers that carried some nice stuff so you had to  make sure radars where off but its fine when your finished cargo opps, THAT BIG RED BOTTON THAT SAYS DO NOT TOUCH, SCREAMS TOUCH ME. >>:-(

Martin, you DID touch something didn't you?

I bet they never found out until the ship was back at sea....

We have not reproduced the plans yet. The intention was that if someone wanted to build the Galea on our hull THEN we would supply the plans. We were not sure that anyone would want to build such a large model. In the event they do not so we have no plans to take the project further.

The mould for the hull was built from plans supplied to us for SS Galea for marine research - water tank testing - and was made by our industrial mouldings division and was not part of Fleetscale. It was thought we might see if the mould could be utilised for Fleetscale. If we were to sell a hull then we would arrange to have the drawings reproduced by the printers.

Saw the SS Galea on Fleetscale, I'd love to tackle it. Big is beautiful, have to split it in half though! Any ideas how much you'd be looking at for the hull?? Drop me a PM, cheers, Dave.  :-))
