Tinted windows
« on: October 05, 2010, 10:52:54 am »

Hello folks, can anyone please advise where I can purchase coloured acrylic sheet (as opposed to the normal clear) to make tinted windows? 1mm thick ideally, have shopped around the popular suppliers to no avail.

               Regards, Tony.

Hi Tony

I also had a look around. I suppose here must be someone somewhere but I couldn't find them.

My first thought was colouring them yourself with a felt tip pen. If you want cloudy then subject them to the smell of Cyano glue. ok2  I seem to make a lot this way.   %)

cheers

Thanks Ken and blackjack, yes Ken I've managed a smoky silhouette or two as well  {:-{, your right blackjack, only in 3mm a little too thick I'm afraid. I'm building the Shamrock at the mo and have seen somewhere (?!) a build of same with tinted windows for the lower superstructure and it looked great, oh well see how we go.

             Cheers and regards, Tony

Iv'e successfully used the following which should be available from your local model shop:-
*tinted acetate sheets (available in various thicknesses).
*tinted aerosol sprays  -as used for model cars windows etc  - make the sprayed side the 'internal' face when fixing in position.

Good luck.

When I built Shamrock I just painted the inside of the windows black :-)) I did it because there is no interior detail in the MS kit. Tinted would be nicer, but black serves its purpose O0

Tamiya do what they call clear colours, used on light lenses etc

Or translucent sprays

Paint inside of plastic

One way that does work quite well if green will suit is using the coloured 2litre plastic bottles. Take plastic bottle, cut piece well oversize, place between heavy metal sheets and stick in  oven (best to sandwich plastic between 2 sheets of baking papar so it slip well and doesn't stick). 150/160 degrees or so, leave to cook. The plastic thickens and shrinks.

Would getting some scraps of window tinting film as used on windows, (such as cars and domestic), achieve the same result.
It is available in different shades/colours.  :-)) :-)) :-))

I went to a local window tinters and they gave me a huge stack of off cuts of all different tint grades, or as said halfords do a spray for that job.

Before I got the film I used black paint thinned to about 1 part paint to 2 parts thinners and just build up the layers slowly till you get it to where you like it  :-)

I tend to just leave one side (the interior) with the coloured protective sheet in place. The edges can be sealed with a little bit of selotape and is unnoticable. BY.

Tamiya also do a transparent black spray called smoke ill post the number later.  Im using it on a chrome body special rc truck with quite an interesting result

Its actually meant for tinting windows on models so its pretty much plastic friendly

I use the tamiya smoke in it's brush on state as a weathering medium and it is very usefull stuff.  You can make it yourself by adding small amounts of pigment to Tamiya clear but the smoke is so easy and convenient.

If you paint it on the insides of the window you will get a very good tinted effect.

Thank you to all for a great response to the topic, very much appreciated.
Barrie, want to tint for exactly the same reason!
Tony, good idea - maybe a brown shandy bottle might be a better colour and would imagine could work the same.
RaaArtyGunner - you've certainly sown a seed for thought - off to the local car bits shop now before it closes!

Thanks again and regards to all.  :-)) Tony.

Thanks again for your input folks - problem solved, followed up Popeye's and RaaArtyGunner's suggestions and bought some limo black window tint film from local car bits shop, very clean and easy to us - sticks like the proverbial doggy do!

There's a fair bit on the roll so if anyone needs a bit (f.o.c.) from the goodness of my heart  {-) --- pm me.

                                     Regards, Tony.
