Unanswerable Questions

Some recent posts have led me to reflect on certain questions to which there seem to be no definitive answer - just opinions.

In no particular order:

What type of varnish should I use?
What should I use to lubricate my prop shaft?
My boat has twin screws - should they turn inwards or outwards?
What is the best speed controller?
Should I use lite ply or birch play - or balsa?
Is Giant Cod better than Planet for 2.5Ghz?
What should I use for ballast?
etc. etc.

I can think of others but let's have your contributions. Model Boat related only please otherwise we will get bogged down with 'What is the best computer?' etc.

It is a bit simplistic to say that there is 'no definite answer - just opinions' to these questions. In the end everything comes down to opinion, of course, but many of the questions you pose seem to me to have answers like:

If 'x' is more important than 'y' then go for A, otherwise B.

For instance, if cost is most important, go for the GC radio, but if better trim and looks are more important, go for the Planet. Unless ground rules like this are specified first, you end up with an interminable argument where the protagonists are arguing about subtly different things....

Is this unanswerable? I had a dream the other night. I usually dream about drivvle But this was quite good and memorable. There was a Nuclear Sub that had been attacked and was sinking. The sub was reaching crush depth and the crew aboard didn't want to die in that manner, so they decided to open the valves and let the water in. Now what happens?  Does the water pour in and they drown or do they get crushed with the pressure of the water inside the sub because of the depth.?


Oops sorry Colin, i forgot to mention it was a model sub with model crew, just to keep it in the model vein! :-))

Garston, if you breach the pressure hull then the pressure will be equalised inside and outside the sub so your George Turner figures will all be squashed. That's answerable  so it doesn't count!

Radar : All of the radars I've ever worked with or seen working rotate clockwise , that includes the larger DARPA commercial radars we had on the FRV Scotia

Weathering : I would leave that to individual taste , there is always a point in any ships life when she is pristine and clean without any marks or rust , just as there will be times when they can look very dirty , rusty and in dire need of repainting , so the best answer to that one is personal taste

Always rotate clockwise Rodger , the display on the bridge is always shown in a clockwise direction so looking down on top of the bridge in plan view looking forward the direction is clockwise

Wrong, Wasyl/Wullie.

If an arm is revolving and you look at it from one side (above, below, in front, behind)it is revolving say, clockwise. If you look at it from the opposite direction it appears to be revolving anticlockwise.

I am sure Davie is correct when talking of a radar display because that is projected on to a screen and can only be viewed from one position just like a clock face.

Na Na Ni Na Na,we  were,nt taliking about arms of clocks or clocks for that matter, Davie was speaking about radar,I,d have a hard job viewing a radar dish when its stuck on top of a plane or ship,looking at it from the opposite side,or the back, {-) {-) {:-{---But!!!! on the other hand,if I have missed something,and i am thicker than i thought i was,then I will graciously admit i,m wrong {-)
