Flat stanchions
« on: October 06, 2010, 05:16:57 pm »

I need a quantity of flat stanchions for my build of the Hibernia please.  Probably at least 50.

The specifications are --  1/32 scale, two hole,  flat in shape with capping rail,  probably around 2-3mm wide,  300 mm from the deck.

I had considered using brass strip and drilling 1mm holes and cutting to size and tapering the ends (the purist scratch builder way) but this seems excessive work for what you get.

Hope you can help please.

300mm is 12inches, not right I think.

That does seem a little long    :}    They are actually 30mm deck height.

I have been to Graupner's site to have a look but unable to trace them.  They have some for smaller scales but mine need to be sturdy. Cornwall model boats have buckets full but not my type so is there another English supplier, do you know please?

Cheers

As a P.S   I've just Googled stanchions and got my letter (above)   O0

How weird is that    {-)

40mm seem the nearest size you will get, next size down is 15mm.

Wonder if you could cut down a 3 hole 40mm to 30mm,  should be about 30mm from top of stanchion to bottom hole.

That's a great idea Mr Jack. I could grind the top to accept a wooden rail.

Thank you for the idea.   :-))

Hi Riggers,
Thank you for the information. This has been emailed to me and I have spoken with Mr Lane. At the moment he is not doing any at 30mm but we had an interesting chat about his other products. I believe he has a printed catalogue which can be obtained for a small fee.

Cheers

Hi Keith

Thank you for that. I have downloaded their catalogue and found the items. They appear to be around the 37 pence mark, whereas Cornwall boats have the oversize ones at 29 pence.

You all have been too kind with your help and it's much appreciated

Thank you.   :-))

hello ken,
have you thought of flat fibreglass as used in printed circuit boards, it is very easy to work adis very strong. I used to work with it for a living and use it for all sorts of things on my boats, and I seem to remember that there a couple of firms in wales that made pcb,s and I am sure that if you asked them on bended knee, you might get a few offcuts, hope this helps and good luck.
                                                                                    yours ron

I did research the major sites and have finally ordered the oversize  (40mm)  ones as I have to move on.

A bit of extra work to shape them correctly but it should be worth it in the end.  ok2

Thank to everyone who helped with the research.
