Southampton Tug Radio Question?
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:46:40 pm »

Received my Southampton tug from Howes today  :-))
I'm very pleased with it and works straight out of the box with the supplied radio, however.....
As I have spare 2.4ghz receivers and want all my boats running on 2.4, I unplugged the 27mhz 2 channel receiver and changed it for the 2.4.
Somewhere I'm going wrong. I can get the rudder servo working off the correct stick, but try as I might, the motors also want to work off the same stick, even plugging the wire into channel 3, or 4 or 5 or 6 has no effect?????
Oh yes, I AM using my 2.4 transmitter  {-)
Any ideas chaps?
Ta so

Does the Rudder servo work in all the other channels?

Hi Martin,
Just checked it and yes, the rudder servo works in all 6 channels of my 2.4 gig receiver.

Just tried the throttle stick and followed all the instuctions on setting up the esc and ziltch.....it just don't wanna work. So I re-connected the Hobby Engine receiver, re-set the esc and it works perfectly  <*<
I'm getting to thinking that the Hobby Engine ESC doesn't like another type of receiver being used....?

This is only a thought as I don't have one of these but does the original set up use a mixer?  If it does is it still in the circuit?

I had the same problem, if you search the site you may find my posts from last year, The only way round the problem I found was to change the ESC.

I think the problem maybe the original speedcontrol only goes full forward or full reverse with no control inbetween if you Know what I mean,
I've replaced all the electric's in my tug with Actions p94 and Bec plus uprated the batteries, a huge improvement over the original eguipment, I also use the Planet 5 2.4 radio and reciever.
regards
Les.

That's it then, thanks lads for all the information  :-)) I'll know now to stop messing about with it and get a new ESC fitted. I have to hand a Viper marine 15A, or could I get away with a 10A do you reckon?
Cheers

OK, now I know what the problem is, I have decided to strip it down and replace the esc as it's hard to access with the deck still in place. I've undone the deck screws including the one hidden under a bollard, I can't see any more at all but the deck is stuck fast, without wanting to force anything, how does one split the two halves?
Cheers
Nige

EDIT:

Very clever these Hobby people, they don't half know how to disguise screw holes >:-o  I found them all though and got everything covered in vaseline as well  %%

Hi Nige52, just a word of warning to check the grub screws holding the props to their shafts as mine were loose!
Regarding the vaseline make sure you have plenty in the bow area as I found water was getting in at this point on my tug.
happy sailing.

Oh yes  :-))
She goes like a good 'un, I'm very pleased with her. Having full proportional is a bonus and I'm looking forward to any steering course the club may put on. I would definitely recommend this tug to anyone, especially at Howes price. I would also recommend doing as I did and put some proper electrics in   :-))

Nice conversion there Nige.
I also have one of these little tugs and i agree its a great model for the price, especially when you make personal improvements. I've improved steering on mine so far but will get round to electrics replacement soon enough. And I know what you mean about those hidden screws...i felt like such a doughnut when i eventually found them! :embarrassed: haha
She's in line now for a new livery though i think and a new name etc !!
 :-)) very nice model though.
