Magnifier
« on: October 12, 2010, 10:56:26 am »

HI All

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I have seen a few pictures of desktop illuminated magnifiers, similar to an Anglepoise Lamp, but does anyone
know where to get them from?

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

Just checked my Axminster Tool Centre Modelling Tools & Machinery 2010 calalogue, the Visual Aids & Worklights section has just what you require.

Website address is www.axminster.co.uk/modelling

Is this what you are looking for

If you want to pay thru the nose
http://www.deagostini.co.uk/shop/products/details/modeller_s_magnifying_lamp_5_x_magnification_181

this is a bit better pricewise
http://www.deagostini.co.uk/shop/products/details/modeller_s_magnifying_lamp_3_x_magnificiation_283

Tho both can be bought elsewhere for about half the price

I have a 5x one exactly the same as the first link and paid €24.99 for it locally(Finland)

Hi Alan,

I have one that I bought at the London model exhibition a few years ago. I've never used it and it's sitting on the shelf. It has an exceptionally large viewing area and is square.

It's quite heavy so I could bring it to Warwick show in November if your interested. It cost around £50 but I could let it go for £30.

Cheers

I always start looking on ebay/amazon..... it at least gives an idea of what is available and prices..... then search manufacturers from any name I find there.

Thanks for the replies,I am seeing magnifiers in my sleep.

Ken,thanks for the offer your light is a bit big for my space, and I need a stand.

I have looked on Amazon and ebay, but nothings appropriate yet.

I will keep looking.

Craft sites seem to have some but they are expensive.

Hi Andy

That looks interesting.

The website say's it is 18.5cm diameter,is thet the magnifier,or the whole thing?

How do you find it to use,is the lens large enough?

Whichever you get, dont leave it with the lens uncovered where direct sunlight can get to it.  I know of someone who managed to set fire to a workbench that way.

I bet it's easy done malcolmfrary, and thanks for the heads up on the safety aspect.

I must admit I didn't even think about it but now you mention it,
I do remember lighting things using a small magnifier when I was at school,
but that was a long long time ago.

Not had a look at Machine Mart??

  http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/categories/search/lamps-magnifyers-chargers-batteries

Sam75 is plasticky rubbish, but Sam100 has been in SWTSMBO s use for about fifteen years.

Hi Alan - the magnifier's about 10cm diameter on mine. Probably the minimum for easy working. Bigger would be better - and this model will only take a tungsten bulb, which might be something to think about. Halogen bulbs would be better - but there is a slight UV risk from those.

What I do find useful is the amount of light thrown on the object. More light -> smaller pupils = better focus at all ranges. I've been stitching sails with no problem under this light, and find the end result is definitely better than I could have done without it.

Just for the record I'm a myopic -5 dioptres in both eyes, 47, and now need reading glasses for any close-range work in non-optimal light.

One thing you could try are +4  or +3.5 Glasses from the Pound shop also sold in may other outlets.

Use a Anglepoise or similar light for plenty of illumination por old eyes need it

I use this system
