Model Slipway Tenby, Yes / No?
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:03:42 pm »

Just joined 'mayhem' today and was about to buy a Tenby from Slipways. Now, having read some of the comments re kits I am a bit apprehensive.
I built my one and only kit model-- a Whale Catcher by Graupner about 25 years ago and it went well despite the instructions and plans being in German. I did have the advantage of working on a real Catcher back in the 70s so I knew where things went and what they looked like.
Should I go ahead with the Tenby?

If you are going to build a Tenby then I don't think you will do better than Model Slipway. I'm not sure what comments you've read, but most kit builders on here I think would agree that Model Slipway are about the best UK kit supplier. Quality is good, support is good, documentation is good, particularly the newer kits.

I haven't built Tenby, but have built other MS kits.

My first kit is a Model Slipway Loyal Class Tender,I was surprised how much was in the box for the price.

Your best bet is to ring Lawrie who owns Model Slipway, and have a chat.

He is a really nice guy,and has helped me with advice and general conversation.

The newer kits are better as a lot have had their plans brought up to date, but do ring
and speak to the man who knows,he won't bite.

Let us know how you get on.

Go for Model Slipway

Have built 4 of their kits and the plans/detailed instruction books are nothing short of excellent :-)

If you do hit any problems then they are there to help - have tried kits from other suppliers and these have not been a patch on Model Slipway

Happy building

Hi there, go for it. I've built the MSW Tenby, good starter kit, just be careful when cutting the vac form bits-don't take too much off. I've got a spare superstructure if you do have any problems with it. Done mine with twin motors/rudders like the real one. Kit doesn't have decals but they're available from Barrys Model Lettering, you can get the stripes from him too in a coachling set. Dave. :-)) :-))

Many thanks to all for the advice. I will probably order the Tenby in the next day or so. I started off thinking about the Trent Lifeboat but The Tenby is probably a more realistic project.
Will advise on progress.

I built a Model Slipway Sentinel back in 2005. Iit was a great kit with excellent plans and instructions, and first class fittings. Plus, Lawrie and Jackie White, owners of Model Slipway, are great people to deal with.

I recently bought the MSW Tamar kit and can only say the quality is great and the instructions are very clear, well worth the outlay.   :-)

I've built a few Model Slipway kits over the years with no real problems. Jackie and Lawrie are always there and willing to help, first class service. Dave. :-)

Many thanks for all the hints.

Ordered a Tenby yesterday. Out of stock for a few weeks so 'Patience'

I read an article somewhere on the www about a chap building  (I think) a Tenby. It had advice and pictures. Given the state of the old grey matter, I can't remember the www site. Any clues.

The article started off with the chap at a model show, asked 'what's new? and was given the Tenby to try.

Any clues?

Thanks again

Alex I think this is the one you need but there are others if you plough through the workboats section.

There's a build feature in the July 2008 copy of Model Boats magazine. You can order a back issue following the link below, or noticing where you're located I could scan it and send it to you via email ? If you subscribe to Model Boats Magazine you can also view it online using the 'digital archive' feature (subscribers only though). Dave.  ok2 ok2

 :-)) Hi Dave,
Cheers for the encouragement, I've made a start by cutting all the heavy carrier plastic off the component parts without mishap but it's reassuring to know theres a spare cabin out there should the worst happen.
                                                                   Regards

Hi,
Great to hear you are joining the fraternity of MAD LIFEBOAT BUILDERS.  They make great models and are certainly crowd pullers.  Just a thought, should we have a separate section for LIFEBOATS.  Keep us posted with photos of your build.  RNLI forever
