Radio Control
« on: February 05, 2007, 10:20:21 am »

 ??? ???Hello,
I have always built static boats either from a kit or on the odd occasion scratch built. I now wish to have a change and get my head round the electrics, wiring & fitting of Radio Control equipment.
My intention is to go easy at first and purchase say a Clyde Puffer.
Can any of you let me know if there is such a thing has a Circuit Diagram to follow or what advise would you give to a laymen on this subject or does the kit drawings and instructions include this info. Regards Ceres.

The trouble with models of this type is that they are very individual, even when made from a kit.

Some people want to fit smoke generators, sound units, lights etc.  Some operating from the radio or some simply from switches in the model.  Some people want nothing more than motor control and rudder control so the choice is very widespread.

All I would say is that all accessories usually come with thier own diagrams but it is then up to the modeller to decide how he wants to put all the bits together.  It is very important to decide just what you want your model to do at the start, get the bits and then plan the model.  If you want to start with nothing more than two channels on motor and rudder control then putting the bits together is very simple.

Your best bet is to buy one of the books on the subject which will take you through all the essentials. John Cundell's "Radio Control in Model Boats" is a good one but there are others equally recommended. People on this Forum will then be better placed to answer specific enquiries. Good Luck!

I seem to remember reading that ActionKit can supply a wiring diagram for the Model slipway puffer.

No boat modeller should have a bookshelf which doesn't include Vic Smeed, John Cundell and Hugh Bright.
Buying this book would be the best thirteeen quid you'll ever spend on the hobby. Hugh was a mine of information and I've heard say that writing this book was what killed him, as he passed away shortly after it was published. I was introduced to him by Craig Talbot of ACTion - two nicer blokes you couldn't wish to meet.
Hugh is sorely missed. Craig is muttering about retirement but I hope he's just joking.............

Ceres,

Problem! I just went to get the diagram and it wasn't there. ??? I had lots of Action instructions filed away, and I remember now I went through them last year and got rid of those I didn't expect to require again. If you were to buy his PICO speed controller, thats where the diagram was.

Sorry about that - in future I will check before I write ;)

I am trying to develop a set up for a puffer, too: radio control of electric motor, rudder, "steam" (JJC), sound and lights

I'll send you a pm when I retrieve my laptop from support folks at the weekend - blue screened last weekend but they tell they've fixed (and that it was all my fault in the first place!

PM because file too large as an image to post an be legible
