Adamcraft Seaplane Tender
« on: October 21, 2010, 11:35:26 am »

Earlier this year I got the restored 1/16th Seaplane Tender back in the water. It was an Adamcraft kit, originally built by my father in 1953, then found in my mothers attic less most superstructure when she passed on around 5 years ago.

I've restored it as no. 1515 which was based in LYME REGIS where I now live and I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge of 'Adamcraft' as I can't seem to find anything on the web.

I remember that the original plan was to have it powered by a Mills 1.3 engine, but he ended up with a Taycol motor and a 6v Lantern battery. I'ts now powered by a 600 Johnson motor, with 7.2v NiCad and 2 channel radio.

Having got the bug again, I'm now attempting to restore a rather battered 34" Aerokits Fireboat of similar vintage.

Best Wishes
Chris

Slightly off topic but love the Model, I used to be a part owner of RAF ST 1510 and something like your model will be my planed next kit, All I can say is the full sized boat was a thing of beauty and handled really well. Somewhere I have a right up on the boats and in them is a very small drawing of some plans, these may be Adamcraft, I will have to search high and low this weekend to see if I can find them.

Thanks for that, I actually bought and built the Deans Marine 1/24th scale kit of the same British Power Boats Seaplane Tender ( built as 441 also based at Lyme - see Pic ) and then scaled up their drawings to get the measurements for the Cabins etc on the 1/16th Adamcraft model.
Then later found and got a set of John Pritchard's 1/8" - 1' Nexus Plans, So I'm alright for plans, what I was interested in was how long the company kept going for and what other models they might have produced.

Regards
Chris

found this as well, with a link to plans

and Adamcraft seem to have been based at Toton in the early to mid 50s

He also wrote a book called "Model Boat Construction" which contains the plans for the hull as a cabin cruiser but various build photos show the Seaplane tender cabin and also an open and closed Speedboat utilising the same hull.

Ours din't arf go with a "Racer", only the back 6" in the water, about 1955.

Strange you mention alternative tops on hulls. I`ve almost completed a conversion of a Veron Thames River Police Launch which has a resemblance to the Seaplane Tender.  My conversion was roughly based on the Wapping River Police Museum photograph. Motor is installed but a few details still to do, seats, lights etc.  It is supposed to be a slightly later version than the Wapping photo.         Nice Jetex trip Bumble, thanks.

Hi Chris

Nice to see another Adamcraft Seaplane Tender, I've one here that needs restoration if I ever get the time....

As has been mentioned - "Model Boat Construction" by Harvey A. Adam is a great book if you get the chance to find a copy, found mine on the AbeBooks site for about £30 but the only ones listed at the moment are in the states & range from £80 - £129   :o

I've attached a quick scan of the original ad. for the kit together with a photograph of another of their products - a beautiful little clinker built dinghy which I was fortunate to find.  The dinghy was available as a kit in 1947.

It'd be fabulous to see some more photos of your model....
