rc galleons
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:19:54 pm »

is it to hard to find a rc ready to run galleon?
it seems so >:-o

i know the fact is that most need to be scratch built or kit build but ive got loads of projects about 10! but have always wanted a galleon but do not posses the time nor the skill to build one so have been looking for second hand or new galleons wich are RTR or ARTR even a conversion from static to rc

if you know a place were i can get one or even you have one you want to get rid of please notify me O0

The only galleon models I have seen are static. Apart from a plastic RTR toy that does not sail, but has electric motors.

I think I read somewhere, that the galleon design does not lend itself well to working models. Models are unstable and don't sail very well. Compared to later ships full size galleons did not sail well either. A key thing with models is to base them on a prototype that sailed well.

Having said that, any model can be RCd but don't expect stellar performance, and I have seen galleons done.

There are several sources of static models, and Cornwall models stock most http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/static_display_models.html .

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

ben hall,
Firstly where are you?
The Portsmouth Display Team made up some hull moulds and use these in their display.
They are quite large however being aprox 5 ft in length, hull only.

Hi Ben

When you say galleon.

Do you specifically mean a galleon, or do you mean the tall ships of what might be called the pirate era?

Sorry Ben

I too have only seen kit or plans.
You may be able to buy hulls, but you would still need to scratch build the upper.
The only RTR is the toy I mentioned before.
The only option would be to keep an eye out on ebay for something complete for sale.

I think the scale sail is a bit too special/niche interest to get manufacturers interested.

you buy the materials ben , its not too dificult to lay up a hull , will the club allow you to borrow the moulds ? a gallon sized can of resin & catalyst is about £18 , you will also need gel coat and some pigment and of course some chopped strand matting . its all available on the island ! jon

of course if you just happened to have a spare 2K lying about you could get one of these.   Now this is what you call a rowing boat.

Vorsprung Durch Technik  of course who else would you expect to make one of these

re mould , having spoken to a member in the know , the mould is in a poor state , which of course ben has been told already , products for grp are readily available from at least three places locally , to buy all of the raw materials to moiuld the hull would cost around 40 pounds , which i would consider a fairly small sum for the production of a single hull ! having had dealings with ben , whatever price hes given for a particular job he wants to be cheaper , or would rather it FREE ! of course most of us older modellers welcome the younger generation to the hobby , and will gladly offer help and guidence when its asked for , but of course as modellers we also have our own projects tat we are working on .

The "King's Ransom" RTR is another possibility: http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/NewProduct.cfm?product_id=1153 . It's much larger (and better made) than the cheap motorised RTR pirate ship, and has a proper radio. Not sure if it has R/C sail control, though (it definitely has an auxiliary motor + prop).
The King's Ransom is no longer in production, but I've seen a number on eBay over the last year or so, all of which sold for much less than the rather high retail price (one went for under £50 including postage)

I am sure this was displayed at the Dortmund Show a couple of years ago. Very Impressive, but I also think it was built by an Italian guy.
