Ruffle Holes ?

  Does anybody know what these are for.They are to be drilled, 2forward,2aft,on the keel of a Watson class life boat.I think it may have to do with launching and retrieval...cheers

I just googled "ruffle holes" and got this.  Hope this helps.

Initially, the lifeboat is secured to the carriage by two preventer chains (one forward, one aft, rove through ruffle holes in the keel) and four stopper chains (two port, two starboard, held on release hooks on the boat deck).

Carriage and slipway lifeboats use preventer chains to hold the boat on the trailer/slipway until ready to launch, i.e. they are the safety chains. They could also in an emergency be used to fasten a tow rope to the boat for hauling out, not often used but possible! ;)

 Pictured in use on my 1/6th Mersey.
