Rescue Boat - What's your favourite idea?
« on: February 08, 2007, 08:10:07 pm »

My club is looking for a new rescue/buoy laying boat. It has to be rugged, easily inflatable and collapse down to a reasonably small size, be big enough for two adults and easily handled on land.

UK prices seem to be around the £500 mark but the 'Sea Eagle' range from the US http://www.seaeagle.com/MotormountBoats.aspx  are considerably cheaper even including import tax and shipping.

Any ideas/comments on sourcing in the UK or buying from the US

Having had several of these type of inflatables for family use over the years, I'd suggest the Purple Marine design the more stable.

It is a good idea. I've seen one which I think might be easier to use. It was constructed in the same way but had a "U" shape right in front rather than to the side. Sorry, haven't got a pic

If the cripple is too far out for the ball on a line treatment, I prefer to tow a line out and round the target, then use the line to haul both back in together.  Just need to make sure that the first 3 yards or so from the back of the rescue boat floats.  Or, if its calm enough, just trying to develop steering and throttle skills by gently nudging the target back to shore.

This is my favorite rescue boat. The basket drops, then lifts the victim out of the water.  O0

That's just like the one I was talking about in my earlier post. Well done Daz !
As for the rescue boat "running over their quarry" as Circlip puts it, then like every other aspect of Model Boating, the outcome will depend on the competence of the operator

Sorry Westcoaster, consider me chastised :embarrassed: I thought Bow Wave
were trying to emulate Rescue and not Salvage.

well with a ship with twin thrusters to use, my trick is up pull beam-on to the stranded vessel, and power up bith cross-keel thrusters, and push the boat beam-on to the shore, adjusting power bias fore-aft to steer, and use the main motor to maintain the position the ship relative to the casualty. Pushed one boat 3/4 the way across a lake using that method, took 10 mins

the RTTL what ever that is (sorry not into forces boats and speedy's so i don't know what a RTTL is)
belongs to a member of the club so i cant claim any credit for it bob .
a simple recovery device is the S shaped one or two Cs  where the recoverer sails into one C and collects the disabled vessel in the other C .
I like the idea of using side thrusters for a recovery operation there Ghost  O0

RTTL= Rescue /Target Towing Launch (in this case the RTTL MKIII). The one above is I believe the 1/20th hull available from Metcalf Mouldings
http://business.virgin.net/metcalf.mouldings/catalogue.htm
Click on Hulls and scroll down to HMAFV Sunderland (Her Majesty's Air Force Vessel).
