Aero/Helis
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:00:25 pm »

Been flying and pranging areos for several years but have decided to have a go at helis 450 size.
Priced them up on the net quite expensive to start up but Ive managed to get a nice second hand Mini Titan pick up tomorrow.
It will be set up for gentle circuits none of this 3D stuff ive seen on youtube.
For my building fix I will build boats for flying I will just use the helicopter.
Anyone else fly helis?

Your chance of success will improve greatly if you can get a good pilot to set it up for you.

Good luck.

I am afraid that I fly collective helos on the simulator but only contras in real life.

Hi I will get Model Heli pilot to set it all up,There's more to Helis than Fixed wing for sure.
Hopefully it will be nice and gentle to control.

I,ve had all kinds of  Rc models,...but my venture into the flying kind, did,nt last long,....suffice to say,I crashed on my maiden flight,...and that was it,....lesson learned,...never take flying a model plane for granted,...getting it up was easy,...it was the getting down,...that bit was the hard part,....goodbye £175,...then i went to Tanks,& boats,....so far no disasters,

Hi you,ll enjoy flying the Heli and at least you can see what you are doin not moving at a million miles and looks good for a second on the flypass haha.
No I love me Helis have all kinds and Im like you no Lunacy I just like a Heli to be a Heli and not a supersonic disaster.
Good Luck with the Titan they are a nice machine but unfortunately I have never had real luck buying second hand machines.. But I wish you all the best in your
new Hobby.. I started with the Indoor 3 channels then moved up slowly after destroying 13 of them before I mastered the little fellahs now I enjoy my outside time also
but I still love my indoor beasties too..

Hi, I have been flying helis for about two years now.   :-))
Started with a Belt CP, which was a twitchy nightmare to begin with, but with a lot of help, I was able to get it flying reasonably well.  :D
Decided to perservere with it and actually learned to fly it quite well. My logic being that if I could fly this (which all the "experts" reckoned to be a horrible machine) then the bigger/better helis would be a doddle.  %)

Now flying a Hurrican X50 nitro beast but never got interested in the " mad insect flying" so just sport flying for me.  :-))  :-))

Take all the help and advice you are offered (especially safety advice), take your time and learn each step thoroughly, be safe and enjoy.  :} :}

BTW, the bigger helis are a lot more stable than the diddy ones.  ;)   ;)

good luck!   be a while before ya doing gentle circuits though...  think 6 pack of xxx lager , ice skates, blindfold trying to balance a bowling on a marble...  its easier than flying a heli (at first)
my advice (which is borne of experience and making a LOT of errors)  get a flight sim for p.c.  there is some free ones which help with stick movement and basic orientation, but very basic,
although not cheap i would buy one of the better ones , believe me when i say . . you WILL crash!!  and 80 quid once can save you alot of money.  make your mistakes/learn on a p.c.   mighty frustrating when 2 min into spinning up you crash and have to get new rotor/tail blades, tail boom, boom supports, etc, etc.    training gear.. looks a Pratt but again saves money and helps confidence.  steep learning curve,  flying aeros  is not really gonna make it easier.    having said that.... if you don't grin like fool and feel like a hero when you can achieve a stable hover which is the first and hardest step..    you will grin ... nuff said.
take your time , rushing leads to nowhere.     its the hardest by far but the most rewarding to do.

p.s   took me 18 month to get inverted . . and about 600 quid..  leaning by your mistakes..... bad idea.

have fun cos it is.

NIGE :-))    raptor 60 nitro and  align 450 flybarless electric

Hi Guys
Several sets of blades later I bought Phoenix RC simulator.
It uses your own transmitter and gives a really realistic 'feel' to what happens when you twitch the sticks.
Not cheap but cheaper than dozens of blades.
Cheers

Just about got it set up (by my reckoning) will take it to a experienced guy in local model shop to check over and hover.
I did run it up in the garden as you do,small hop then stopped, tempted though Lol.
I had to return it to beginner set up as the previous owner had it set  as 3D green paddles nice blades etc.
I had to buy a new tail servo as I fried the other one but £100 for a as new Titan ready to go seems a good deal to me.
Setting the Gyro confused me a bit, never used half the functions on my Tx before but thats what they are there for I suppose.
Onwards and upwards.

Or if you don't mind building from a kit, try Martin Rouseau https://mraerodesign.securicom.ca/en/products/index.cfm?RubriqueID=4  I know it's a 415 and not a 215 but it can have working landing gear and water scoops/water drop :-))

I TRIED THE HELI ROUTE, I soon found out that I could crash with the best. In the space of a month  I spent more on repairs than the chopper cost in the first place. Enter the BOSS, she bought me a program for my computer to learn to fly it included spektrum 5e. I was a total failure, so guess what I decided to build RC boats instead & at least put the spektrum to some use,the worst that can happen is it will sink, & if the water shallow enough I should be able to recover it.I am learning a new hobby & am fascinated by the technology & sheer scale of the hobby..
