Martin
on my heng long tank it uses 2 x 380 type motors working in 2 gear boxes and the motors can be taken off the gearboxes but as for the esc's urgh they are pretty crappy and built into the rx and other electronics board
the tracks ? are you thinking of using them as drive belts between the motors and shafts ?
i am considering replacing the tanks electronics with 2 x viper marine 15 amp esc's , a spekky 8 channel rx and micro swithches to work the gun and turret motors as the radio range is pretty limited (25 or so yards )

Yes, that sort of thing. just the controller board and motors.
You say the 'Long hen!' type aren't much cop, but what about the Tamiya types?
Or are they mega bucks anyway?

dont know about the tamiya type but would think they are a lot better than the heng long type but will prob cost an arm and a leg
tamiya tiger tank is about £400 or so , heng long tiger is £60-80 ( cheapish copy of tamya tank )
there was a problem with earlier versions of the heng long boards that the esc's were on the thermal limits just moving the tanks and were burning out but later boards arnt as bad but you could check out some tank forums and that may let you know what types and makes of boards to go for

I have a motor gearbox setup with metal gears from a Heng Long tank if you want it... bought in error and it fits none of the tanks we currently own lol.

As for the speed controller cant help you there, besides they are an all in one unit containing the ESC, RX, smoke, sound, etc

What about one of these, they say they have proportional speed control and seem cheap enough, what do you think?

What's the slow speed control like?

Is there a video of this type on Utube?

Same here... I have the tiger as shown on howes with smoke and sound The only issue I have with mine is that it does like to throw one of the tracks now and then when run on high grip surfaces.  I have the metal gearbox, track and wheel upgrade kit that I'll get round to doing one day tho, so I'm hoping that will improve matters

I got mine from Howes complete with metal tracks, wheels and gear box. I have no problems though I dont use it on carpets, as the instructions.

Be careful not to overfill the smoke oil as this will knacker it until it dries out, this will take forever. {:-{

I'm going to run it around the living room once, then rip the guts out of it and convert a Seaport tug to Twin Shaft... that's what I want the tank radio for.   :-))

ARGH! wish I'd known!

We have a broken HL KV1 here.  The internals are fine but the wheel and suspension is broken so its not driveable

Could have done you a deal

:P What a numpty!   ... couple of clue in me posts!

"Can a tank motor / tracks / speed controller be used in a twin shaft boat?"

"just the controller board and motors."

"What about one of these, they say they have proportional speed control and seem cheap enough,"

Well it pitched up today.... how disappointing.  :((

It's big and impressive but no proportional track speed, just half and full.  >:-o

"Fully radio control high detail 1/16 scale tank featuring high gripping caterpillar tracks, proportional speed forward, back, right and left movement "

Now all the hassle of sending it back....

Can anyone recommend one with proper proportional speed control....  that won't break the bank?

what 1 was it ?
my tiger has full proportional forward and back but it does sometimes take a bit of stick to make it go , could be a tightness in my tracks tho

Great model really... BIG!  Tracks run very free but only 2 speeds. Trundles around like an old black & white Dalek!

there was 2 versions of this one has the RX14 system and the other the better RX18 with full proportional control

Looks like you got one of the early ones
Does it have smoke and sound?

I've got an early tiger 1, with smoke and sound, and as you say it's got the rx14 board so it's stop, go, go faster.

Martin if you just want the controls, you can buy the board and wiring separately rather than buy a whole tank and rip it apart.

Yes you're right of course but the whole purpose of this exercise was to "grab" a 'cheap' twin motor control unit, this is starting to cost twice as much!

Heng Long RX-18 MFU with Cooling Fan & all wires = £39.95
Complete RX-18 Smoke & Sound Upgrade Set = £69.95

 :((

A couple of ESC, Giant Cod radio, 2 x motors, shafts, props... £70- 100  {:-{
