Model of the Golden Hind
« on: November 25, 2010, 03:17:20 pm »

My father's cousin made a model of the Golden Hind as a weddiing present for my parents in 1936.  It is in a sorry state now, and I would like to restore it.  I have never done anything like this before, so any advice would be helpful; initially for cleaning it up. I would also like to try and get hold of some plans - can anyone help, please?

remove everything thats not a fabric, and give it a carful bath in warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush, and if the sails are fabric use a sponge to do the same. see what the final outcome is of a decent clean, it may only need a bit of a sand down and repaint, and some replacement rigging.

Whats it made of, wood?, only thing i can think of doing is a sand down, use some sanding sealer to seal the wood prevent it rotting etc and re-paint it, i doubt its an accurate 'scale' representation of the Hind given its years so im not sure if a plan would help you for this restoration, but it may be worth considering to scratch build a new version of a plan, if the original boat is in to bad a state to be repaired.

plan here

and a link to the model from your side of the pond, this photo alone will show the differences between a scale model to the 'stand off scale' you are looking to restore.

1936 eh? Quite a while ago, so if it was from a plan you may have trouble tracking it down. If I recall correctly Woodworker magazine did a Golden Hind plan back then, along with Victory and Cutty Sark. Also, my father made one from a plan by Modelcraft, which still comes up on Abebooks occassionaly as @Make a Model Galleon' Book and 6(?) sheet plan. Might be worth comparing size etc.
Apart from that, as stated in previous posts, take care with any dismantling, keep notes of where bits come from, put them back 'sympathetically'' and don't overdue redecoration.
