Holding the Deck with Magnets?
« on: November 29, 2010, 07:17:36 pm »

HI Guys

My Hermann Marwede kit is progressing slowly but surely.

I have been wondering how to hold the deck in place once it's completed,
but still be able to remove it for access to the radio/batteries.

I had the idea of using small Rare Earth Magnets, but as I know nothing about them,I thought
it best to ask.

Any comments regarding the suitability would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Is this the revell kit? What I did with mine was use some 1/2 long x 1/4 x 1/8 pieces of plastic along the sides of the hull then put a piece across the hull to take the front of the rear deck and another to take the rear of the front deck  just make sure you leave enough room for the rudders to turn I didn't and the rear deck lifts slightly when turning Yours Scout

Graupner sell magnets for just such a use. I have a packet which I bought at a trader's day at our club recently, but have not yet used them. They are quite small, but strong enough for the purpose. The Graupner part number is 1069.

Used magnets to hold the main deck down on Blue Marlin - worked great.

Bought them through e bay, cheap enough.

I use magnetic cupboard catches. Magnet is mounted in plastic frame allowing movement.Frame has elongated holes to allow for
allingnment.Other piece is flat plate. These can be brought from most diy stores.Magnetism just right to allow removal.John

I understand the model aircraft peple use them to hold hatches, cockpits etc so they should be fine for us - I'm planning to use them on the PT boat superstructure and cabin top.

Hi Guys, I use wardrobe catches on my Shamrock Police to hold the superstructure, just remember to re-route any wiring well away from them
Hope this helps
