If it was reported to me correctly, that the local council were demanding £5,000 for the use of the hall for the event, its clear the event is finished at this venue at least. It would be a shame if it couldn't relocate. Several people mentioned lack of advertisement which again seemed a big factor, even the road signs were scant.

Great to meet so many old and new friends, Brian, Bluebird, (thanks for the photos, if I can prise them off Nick I'll get to see them  :-))) several of ModelwarshipsUK forum, including Doug from South Africa, Bob Taylor and many more...

Congratulations to (pugwash) Geoff Hobson, who took an Award for HMS A

I'd like to thank all those who contributed to the Help 4 Heroes Charity collection which raised over £230 and the kind comments and interest shown in the rebuilt HMS Edinburgh By Chris Bullock (Boatman) and myself,

.

I was especially impressed by 4 or 5 models on show, and the Tynemouth and Saltwell stands, and a bit bemused to recieve an award for HMS Lindisfarne for Best of Past Winners?

Lets hope a new venue, in a cheaper location with better advertisement can be found.

Sentiments I tend to agree with. I live in South Shields, but I have not seen any advertisement in the local papers etc at all. I get most papers delivered and most of the local rags will put events in the whats on sections for free. I didn't even see a notice in the local library. One trader from Middlesex told me that he didn't think he would cover his fuel costs to get to the event, never mind other costs.
I think it is very sad that lots of people have given their time and effort for what has turned out to be a bit of a white elephant.
The venue is very good, but the location of the venue may not be. There is no passing trade. You have to know what is going on there to drop in.
The poor chap with the huge tool stall said his trade was a disaster. He has been at every NEBS, as I have, but I doubt if he will attend again. I overheard a bloke with a  Sunderland accent ask him how trade had been, prompting the above response. The Sunderland accent responded by saying that the venue was in the wrong place, adding that our place, although smaller, was on the seafront at Roker and would maybe attract more passing trade. He added that the venue would probably cheaper which may make it more attractive to traders. Perhaps more traders = more exhibitors and more punters.
I have no experience in the organisation of these type of shows but even a casual observer can see that something is wrong here.
I do hope my two pennorth can help out with things but if the local politics, bitching and backbiting cannot be overcome, then the show is doomed. In my opinion.
Yours hopefully
John

I can not really comment on the price to hire the venue  but if true £5000 seems very steep to me.

Although a slightly different venue and situation a club I am associated with hire swimming pools (The whole pool including lifeguard) at £50.00 an hour, and I would have thought that the running costs of the pool are considerably higher than a sports hall  costs ?. And to hire a boat with crew to pilot a swimmer across the English channel is only 2.5k  I think that £5k must be wrong I.M.H.O.

hi all

After the last North East show at the week-end there was a lot of speculation about a show for next year. Several members of the clubs in the North East are putting their heads together to see what can be dune to try and put a show on next year , also as a side note the leisure hall hire was not £5000 it was less than £2000 for 3 days - so watch this space as they say

My first thoughts must be just how serious the organisers were about making this a success in the first place. All three were dreadfully promoted to the public at large.
Why would anyone want to sabotage their own event? You argue like my ex-wife. The best model shows of the year IMHO are, in no particular order, the Olympia MEE, Warwick International Model Boat Show, Shepton Mallet and Harrogate. All have two things in common: 'professional' full-time organisers and high admission fees. One is a consequence of the other, and it doesn't take an act of genius to work out why.
Tyneside is (was) the home of Engineering in all of its guises...shipbuilding being only one part of it. My personal opinion is that Model Boats on their own is of limited appeal, and the show should have been a more general exhibition of modelling.
Presumably organised by anyone except yourself, thereby allowing you the continuing luxury of sitting back and sniping at their efforts.
So have we, as a nation, got a big blank area all the way Northwards from Harrogate? I fear so.
Only to the east of the Pennines it seems, matey. The North West shows at Birchwood Leisure Centre and Blackpool are much better attended and supported - with the very same trade "organiser". Not wishing to denigrate the hard work which was done by some clubs and individuals at South Shields/Tyneside, but logic says that the attendance must be something to do with the locals, not the geography or the weather.
As they say across the pond, you do the math............
Good luck to Bluebird and his mates for next year. They are in the best position to know what to do; when and where to do it, and who can be relied upon to help out - and  who can't.

Just a note to add with regard to attendance at the show:-

The weekend of the show also coincided with free attractions in the Northumberland & Durham areas - including the likes of Bamburgh Castle and Cragside - this, along with the beautiful weather made for plenty of choice for the general public. These attractions were announced on local radio stations.

I've attended all three of the North East Model Boat shows and thoroughly enjoyed them and hope something else can be organised in the future.

May I take the opportunity to thank the Organisers and the various Model Boat clubs for their efforts.

Regards,

Ray.

... as said in initial posts; the £5000 figure was mentioned to me at the Show and I was in the process of finding out if that figure was anywhere near correct.

I won't go into the other posts about Birchwood etc and attendances -if anything its those over there, who don't come up here , whilst me and my mates travel across to there events, and again, the lack of advertising in local papers and radio didn't help, combined with other attractions and the venue position in South Shields...but that's all water under the bridge....l

To Bluebird for me " John -thanks for the more accurate figure of hall hire. Lets hope the event can continue"
