Transferring plans/drawings to wood and plastic
« on: September 26, 2010, 02:25:10 pm »

Was wondering what the consensus is on the best way to move plans from paper onto wood or plastic.

I have tried the cardboard cereal box template method which is satisfactory, but was interested to hear what method the pros use.... I did see in a post somewhere using carbon paper and 'tracing' method. i have also used direct measurement and re drawing, but only really satisfactory for straight line objects, at least with my drawing skills!!

What do others recommend worth a try??

If the plans are on a computer you can print them out at 100% size, then sellotape the paper to the wood, plastic or metal and cut round them directly. I suspect you could just photocopy a paper plan in segments and do the same, though you would have to be sure that no sizing error was creeping in.

I believe that some printers which are designed to take card can also print directly onto wood sheet - and of course a flat-bed plotter can easily do this...

I have tinkered with printing plans or letters.. Print in a mirrored image mode. Then using a old iron set on wool transfer the print onto wood. I would use caution on plastic... try a sample first...it takes some fiddling but it does work on wood.. just have to experiment with heat and inks that work..

I scan segments of my plan and print them at 100% then cut them out and Pritt stick them to the wood and cut around them. Then they peel off really easily  :-))

Super 77 spray adhesive.

Print out the plans full size, If necessary, fold the paper in half, cut the frame line you want, unfold the paper and
number it in bold pen for the frame. Then spray the back side and stick the pattern to your plywood. or frame material.

 :-)

Don't forget to leave a web, or material at the bottom center of each frame to cut a  keel slot.

The best technique to use depends on the material you are transferring onto. Gluing a plan is easy to do on plastic or hard wood - less successful on balsa (where I use sellotape) Sellotape, however, is hard to use if you have a lot of long thin parts, as it is easy to distort the plan while putting sticky tape on.

You can get impressive results on balsa with the 'ironing' method, but note that this only works with inks that can be melted - that is, laser print or Xerox photocopys, but not inkjets....

I find the 'cotton' setting on an old iron is about right for toner transfer method. I use this with some success on PCB boards, but haven't tried it on wood.

the cotton setting on the iron is great for photocopy and laser prints, I always wipe the paper with white spirit before ironing,. as it softens the toner and you get a better image!

I print two copies of the plans and cut out the shapes with scissors from one copy. I use rubber cement to fasten the shapes to my wood. After scroll sawing these templates peel off easily and can even be used to make duplicate pieces.
