DAVID MacGREGOR PLANS from SS GREAT BRITAIN TRUST
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:47:51 pm »

Hi there,

Just a quick enquiry - has anyone on the Forum managed to secure/purchase a set of plans from the David MacGregor list via the SS Great Britain Trust yet?   Just wondering.

ive looked on the web page , they are listed under the brunel institute as a link to the ss great britian , however they do show a contact number at the bottom of the page , starts 0117 962???? . however due to the weather of late things have been slow at getting from bristol , as my mum sent two letters a week apart yet they both arrived together two days before christmas ! might be worth phoning them up to check , they are closed on the 10 th of jan 2011 but open daily upto  & afterwards .

I spoke to a very nice lady today at the Trust.  Apparently, various plans are in the process of being sorted and catalogued.

The other thing mentioned was that some of the plans are in a bit of a state - for printing/copying.   What she suggested for the time being is to the list the plans required from the David MagGregor/Norman Ough selection and submit them to the Trust (via post) they then take it forward - and contact as to availability.

Apparently, there are large waiting lists - so a time scale for release of the plans to general public sale is a bit 'foggy'.

That seems to have been the case for a couple of years or more so don't get your hopes up! Reading between the lines it sounds that the original plans have been allowed to deteriorate. If the plans were in good condition then reproducing then with modern facilities should be no problem at all. I rather fear that some very valuable material has been lost forever.

Fleetscale acquired a hull mould for SS Great Britain - about 4-5' long but due to the dire situation re plans and lack of cooperation from those that hold them we have not attempted to offer it to modellers.

Like many modellers, I have been waiting for these plans to re-appear. However, I'm not holding my breath.

The company I used to work for, after changing from a drawing-board to CAD-based design office digitised all their drawings, some of which were over 50 years old (we were still using some components and assemblies designed in the 1950s). The process took two years and cost an arm and a leg. Not too hard for a commercial organisation making (then) huge profits, but in today's economic climate I doubt they would have bothered and I certainly don't see a charitable trust rushing to spend that amount of money "on spec" to satisfy the needs of a relatively few people.
