Nav Lights backing boards
« on: January 06, 2011, 10:47:26 pm »

Hi All,

Does anyone know which year the backing boards for navigation lights changed from Red / Green to Matt Black ?
I'm wanting to get this right before I start my next build...thinking of something around 1945-1950 era.

Regards,

Ray

Hello Martin,

Thanks for that link. I've read through that thread and it appears that the contributors were referring to 2 different vessels in their responses...........apart from the obvious differences in superstructure, the hulls were 1 = blue  2 = red ! No wonder there was confusion  %%

However, you have answered my query, end of thread I guess ? (I hope) %)

Regards,

Ray.

Capn'...You'll be fine with red & green sidelight screens. W didn't change ours until 1972...and that was a bit before it was made law. Did you know that there are also "rules" about the dimensions of these things? BY.

Good Evening Bryan,

Did you know that there are also "rules" about the dimensions of these things?

Nope, wasn't aware of that one, well worth a discussion though.

Ray.

From the International NavRules book (USCG COMDINST M16672.2D) it appears black backing boards have been required since 1972 (or 1977 when the 72 COLREGS went into effect):

(Page 140)
5. Screens for sidelights
The sidelights of vessels of 20 meters or more in length shall be fitted with inboard screens painted matt black, and meeting the requirements of Section 9 of this Annex. On vessels of less than 20 meters in length the sidelights, if necessary to meet the requirements of Section 9 of this Annex, shall be fitted with inboard matt black screens. With a combined lantern, using a single vertical filament and a very narrow division between the green and red sections, external screens need not be fitted.

There's also something about fitting a vertical "foil" at the front end of the screen. The width of this may vary, but it's intended to prevent the light being seen across the bows. If that was the case then both sidelights would be seen when the ship was not head on. I've had some experience here....not good ones either. Especially with vessels that only need carry one mast light. BY.
