Model Boating in Somerset/Devon
« on: January 14, 2011, 05:37:23 pm »

SWMBO has started agitating about moving somewhere between Taunton & Crediton. (I quite fancy Watchet for the flatner connection) Are there any good boating lakes/ponds in the area?

... a wealth of info here on clubs in the SW, my mate just moved to Wellington, and sails with the Tone Valley club, but the Exeter club is a short jaunt down the M5...especially on Father's Day

Agreed, ref the Exeter and Wellington waters, but you might be a tad disappointed as far as Watchet is concerned. The Watchet 'beach' has what is laughingly described as a boating pool - only it's full of rocks, gung, johnnies, weed and everything apart from water. They used to be pretty cool about sailing your models in the harbour actual - especially when they have their annual carnival weekend, but all that has changed now - they only permit the harbour for full-sized mooring. Plus it's smelly there; they have a terrible problem with their sewage/drainage systems.
The River Tone at Taunton is sometimes used by a few die-hard modellers, as too the local waters at Tiverton.
As a point of interest, although I have never been on your side of the border, they tell me that Scotland is a magical place. Why would your good lady want to give all that up in exchange for this dead-end dump?

Hi Dude, PMK, is Mangerton Mill anywhere near where you are billetted?  I remember one time going to Mangerton Mill and there is a nice sheltered boating lake and good facilities for modellers it seemed.    Mind you, when I got there, there was neeone aboot - perhaps they knew the Geordies had arrived rape, pillage and plunder........but we got absolutely nowt - we did buy a glass duck from the gift shop  %) %) - and if I remember there was a water wheel there...... and I think there was a canny pub not far off sold rawhide steaks but you had to catch the coos in the field  %% %%

aye happy days

Hey, Bloobs.
You know, apart from living a couple of years in Cornwall, and another couple years in Devon, I've otherwise lived in Somerset pretty much all my life. And in all that time I can't say that I've ever heard of Mangerton Mill. Are you sure that you're not confusing it with the Mangerton Mill in Dorset?

Love your spelling/pronunciation of cows/coos, by the way.  :}

This is part of the lake used by the Exeter & District Model Boat Club. This part is used mainly by the powered models and behind the willow tree, which is on an island is a larger area of lake used by the yacht boys. The lake is a couple of miles to the east of Exeter and I'm sure you'd be made welcome if you cared to visit.
