Two problems Help!!
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:31:33 am »

Various r/c boats owned by young son have presented following problems:
First up model lifeboat bought by granddad from nauticalia. One of the two pod motors has filled with water and seized (surprise surprise) need to know where to get replacement motors as Grandad recently passed away and this last present from same. Any Ideas?

Second up CC Lee victory r/c boat. On first run worked well responded well we use on quiet part of local river Eden no other boats evident. Second outing, at full revs boat began to veer principally to right side acceleration was fine and equal, when max speed reached problems occurred. Being a simple man I thought initially change the rubber tubing evident on the drive shafts as shock protection as one was showing signs of splitting assuming that this was causing slippage. Return to water same problem evident before delving into electrics has any one else come across this problem?

nauticalia  is a shop/ online shop/ and reseller Ben, they used to sell Boating bits, and boat inspired stuff (ships bells etc for your home) they seem to have branched out to other things in recent years, but its mainly Nautical based stuff.

Nauticalia don't seem to have a lifeboat listed in their stock so can help there. :((

CC Lee victory
This may be something as simple as an underwater current taking the boat,
or may even be a ballast problem, if it is slightly heavier on the right hand side it may drift that way at full speed. hope this helps in some way

Hello, I have had a seized up motor of the type in your picture. This looks like the lifeboat the RNLI sold.  I squirted some WD40 on the shaft and bearing and left it for a bit and then used a pair of pliers to turn the shaft one way then the other and it loosened off, drop of ordinary oil and it has worked OK since then.
good luck Roy

There is a thread on Mayhem somewhere that suggests that using WD40, on its own, as a lube can destroy motors. As WD40 is not a lube.

However, letting WD40 work as a freeing agent and then oiling before running, as suggested by roycv, seems to work.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about motors than me can chip in.

ref your victory boat , is that one with two motors but no rudders ? as there could lie your fault , in a partial siezed motor , or a failing speed controller . these models also have a water operated safety switch , which is essentially an earth lead onto the propshaft tube , if this isnt making good contact the model will fail to work properlly !

Three thoughts for Victory.
1/ Were there other boats second time out?
May be interference if the boat has a cheap radio.

2/ Do both the props turn in the same direction?

3/ Maybe the motors do not run at the same speed at full throttle. Perhaps one is sticking/rubbing a wee bit. Or some other issue when the motors are under load and the current draw is high.

Wow!
Thanks guys cant believe the response  %%
Yes thats the pod motors tried all kinds of lube to free them off but no joy there was a longish lay up between uses so I guess completely seized ref the victory yes it is the two motor variety I think the idea of one motor being a little down is looking right as one sounds a little less "urgent" than the other have a meter but not sure how to test whether the fault is electrical or hardware.Have removed and cleaned a load of gunge out of the prop tubes, and reoiled with motor oil. Will try in local river again when calmer, no other boats evident during fault btw Also note with interest reference to earth lead to propshaft tubes is not evident on this boat.

Check for Capacitors on the motors, route the reciever antena away from the motors.
