To paint or not to paint???
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:09:03 pm »

That is the question..... %%

I am getting to the superstructure assembly part of my Ranzow build and was wondering what you all done when it comes to painting it? It is predominantly white with just a black band along port & starboard and a fluorescent red band around the roof and green on the roof. So my question is would you paint the the already white superstructure white or just paint the 3 colours mentioned above and leave the rest the shiney white that the plastic already is?

Hi there pupjoint

It is very adviseable to paint plastics - especially the styrene type.  This is because some UV light is found in sunlight and is emitted by electric arcs and specialized lights such as black lights. Most ultraviolet can be classified as non-ionizing radiation, and can cause chemical reactions, by hardening the plastic which then becomes brittle - this also happens with age.   So, always best to put a barrier in place to try and prevent this and paint, I feel, is one of the best barriers.
