Which motor / batery / prop combination?
« on: March 09, 2007, 12:59:38 pm »

I have no knowledge of electric motors etc and would like some advice from you learned chaps.    I have just started to build ww2 German Schnell boat,     40 inches in length and 6 1/2 beam.   I am using ply for the keel, bulkheads and the hull will be sheeted in 1/8 balsa so its not going to be very heavy.   I am only going to use a single prop and do not want the thing to go screaming across the water so a scale speed would be desirable.           ???

That is quite a large model to propel at reasonable speed with a single motor.
It will have to be quite large and powerful.
I would go for a Graupner 700BB turbo on 9.6 volts, high capacity Ni Cad Or MiNim battery and a racing 2 blade submerged drive prop.
The motor new is about £25-00 and the battery depending on which type and capacity from £25 to £50.
Also use a high capacity speed controller, at least 20 amps and fuse protected.
have you considered using 2 x motors as you could use 2 x 550's at about a tenner each.

Thanks for the help guys.     Just been reading the electrical section of mayhem which I only discovered today and  I will probably go the single motor route because of simplicity.
