Maxitrak Mini Boiler packages
« on: January 17, 2011, 05:57:48 pm »

Hi Gents,
Has anyone purchased a Maxitrak Mini Boiler package yet?
I am needing information on them as to water capacity & general overall quality of construction.
I am also wondering what are the major differences (if any) to other brands of 3 1/2 " boilers besides the ability to use as horz or vertical.
I am not in the UK so it is impossible to see them first hand.
Thanks!

Hi Reg,

E-mail Andy Probyn at Maxitrak, he is always very helpful in answering queries.

I'm only 20 miles from his workshop/design office and obtain most of my boiler materials from Maidstone Engineering, which is part of Maxitrak. I often have a chat with Andy about my experimental flash boilers - he is particularly proud of his welded copper boilers, which I can see are of high professional standard.

He is exhibiting at the London Model Engineering Exhibition this coming weekend.

I purchased copper welded boiler from Maxitrack in2009. I am not able to get into my workshop today but will post some information tomorrow when I measure it up, if it seems similar to the one you are thinking of then I will post some images.

Hi Reg,

I forgot to say that I will most likely see Andy at the Exhibition (I'm exhibiting my steam boats for three days)  this coming weekend, so if could list your questions, I'll endevour to obtain some answers for you.

Thanks guys for your replies. I really appreciate it! :-))
I am looking to purchase a boiler & the rest of the bits for my TVR1A.

Ian,  the link is what I found but I was just not finding the water capacity & number of tubes/type of that boiler.
Interesting that you can use it vertical or horizontal but does that give a compromise from one built specifically for, let’s say horizontal.
I notice in another brand the same size boiler has different water capacity in the horizontal vs. the vertical.
Any interesting info you can get will be appreciated

Of all the things I would love to visit England again to see, the London Model Engineering Exhibition is high on the list!

Yesterday I promised to give you some data about my Maxitrak boiler, it is 3 inches dia by 6 inches long with a burner/flue tube 1 inch dia it has NO cross flow tubes, this was a dissapointment to me. The boiler can be used as a vertical or horizontal unit I chose the latter.
It is of TIG welded copper with two welded stays. It comes stamped with a number and a hydrotest cert from Welding Innovations Ltd (their term) and gives the following info: made from copper C106, test pressure 87psi/6bar, time hold 2 hours and is signed by the tester and inspector/witness. One has to deduce that the working pressure is 45psi/3bar but our club boiler inspector concurs with this fact. I have carried our my own total volume test which comes to 0.675 litres so at a pressure of 3bar is comfortably within the 3bar litre rule. I also bought the burner from Maxitrak which is a 1 inch ceramic unit with secondary air ducts and a No8 jet. This burner set up is quite potent and appears to make up for the lack of cross tubes.
I have steamed the boiler in my part finished TID tug and powers the J Hemmens twin very adequately.
I hope this quick summary helps, do ask questions if there have been points that I have missed.

Hi Reg,

I've spoken to Andy at the Maxitrak exhibiton stand this afternoon.

Here is the information that I've managed to obtain:-

1) The main boiler shell is welded, since the copper is to a known standard.
2) The single flue is silver-soldered since it is of "plumbing" quality.
3) He didn't know what the water capacity was and his advice was to calculate it from the shell dimensions minus the flue dimensions.
4) Similarly he didn't know if there was a difference in capacity between the horzontal and vertical positions.
5) Cross-tubes in the flue were available at extra cost.
6) The working pressure was about 80psi

To give his due he was very busy attending lots of visitors and perhaps he couldn't remember the figures from the top of his head.

It is a good exhibition - shame about the London location though.

Hi Ian,
There seams to be a bit of an anomaly in the makers statement of the WORKING pressure about 80 psi  and yet TAG's certificate states pressure TESTED to
87 psi/6bar.
I appreciate that he was busy at the time but perhaps if you are there again tomorrow you might clear it up.
