Help on decideing scale
« on: July 10, 2011, 01:31:58 pm »

I am trying to find a scale to build a model of A Nauticat 331 L.O.A 10.40m Beam 3.40m Draft 1.60m Height above waterline 14.3m .This is a Motor sailer Ketch. This is on Siltala Yachts  web site . I do not want to get to far down the line and find I can not  fittings. After trawling thru the web the only place I can find oval mast is Ludwig  RC yachts in the USA with a size .625x371.. I understand it will be very hard to get every thing to scale and will have to compromise somewhat I am also trying to get to grips with Delftship and the tutorial that goes with it ,so help there would be good if possible .                                                                                                                                                                                  Thanks for the help, David

you should start with what you can handle. At 1/10 scale the model would be 1 meter and 4 cms long. That is just about 41 inches and close enough to 1 metre as makes no difference. The 1 metre class is widely used and supported by many yacht fittings companies. So I suggest you take a look at a 1 metre yacht and see if that's what you want

Dougal, I think David wants scale fittings as well as the rig fittings.

David,

Nice project :-))

I think I know the mast section you've found, unfortunately they can't ship over 1metre to the UK, (some "xxxxx" EU transport regulation), but there's a UK supplier that can supply aerofoil (teardrop) section masts, but I'm stumped as to who it is just now :embarrassed:  Check out www.Sailsetc.com for rig fittings - they have loads.

There's two equally effective ways on deciding what size boat to buy / make.

1.) Carefully measure up the room in your car, the room available in your house to store it, and any passageways (including bend in doors etc) it needs to go through while going though the house. Then deduct a small amount of size to allow for the model to go easily into these spaces.

2.) Do it the way most people, including myself do. Buy the biggest one there is available, then work out where you're gonna put it when it arrives {-)
