Can anyone recommend a Glass Fibre specialist
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:53:38 pm »

OK not a boat topic but I hope that some one can help me here.

I recently acquired a set of moulds for a Hispano Buchon, The Buchon is a Merlin engined version of the Messerchmitt 109 fighter aircraft. It is most well known as playing the role of the ME 109 in the Battle of Britain. See pictures attached of the molds.

The model is approx 68 inch span.

Having never moulded before and not wanting to screw up what could be some moulds with history I wonder can anyone point me in the direction of a company that would do the work for me at a reasonable price. I am located in Coventry so something nearby would be helpful.

Regards

Hi arrow5.

It will be static only.

I am presently trying to delve into the history of the moulds from information the seller gave me. Discussion on a couple of forums centre around the basis that they are not moulds from flying models but are in fact moulds for the models that were given out to some cinema's to hang in their lobbys for the release of the BoB film. I am still trying to workout whether this coud be the fact or not.

I could well be interested in investing in a run. Friends and fellow forumites elsewhere have expressed an interest in having a set and if enough people have a desire I am willing to take the plunge.

The moulds are certainly up for it and I have been told they are a mould type designed for a production run rather than a one off.

If anyone is interested please feel free to PM me and I will look into it.

Hi there Alsonso

Looking at the picture of the moulds which you have put on the forum, I first thought they came from an injection-mould setup, but, you would have had the inner to go along with the exterior moulds as well.

What made me think this is - it looks as though, around the flanges you have what appear to be locating slots on the moulds.  These would be fitted into a cradle, then fibre glass matting would have been placed into the bottom half of the mould.  The internal mould would then have been placed on top.     Then, the whole unit would have been placed into a press, where the resin and hardening mixture would have been injected in.   With you not yet having a photograph on the forum I am unable to tell if this is an injection mould.   Very much doubt it is though.

As far as looking for someone who is capable of producing good castings from these moulds, and bearing in mind the rarity of them - the only person I myself would trust and who has insurpassable experience and knowledge in fibre glassing I would recommend a gentleman named Robin Whitmarsh from Kingston Mouldings - and this is the link - http://www.kingstonmouldings.com/home.htm - so you should contact him.   Hopefully, he will be very sympathetic in the rarety of these moulds - should be able to advise you/put you in touch with someone who can help.
