Rudders
« on: January 31, 2011, 05:01:43 pm »

Hi to all,    I'm after a rudder for my Loyal Class Fleet Tender which is one of model slipway kits.
The rudder I have is of white metal and over the week-end the shaft broke so I'm left with no rudder  as we all know now white metal
bends and breaks, so i'm after a new rudder scale 1/24 and made from metal and a metal shaft.any help would be so welcome as Im no good at making them.

Can you use the broken rudder to scratch build one from brass?

I've been viewing your build thread, and find this hard to believe.
Brass sheet, use the original as a pattern and cut the shape out, solder to a flat filed on a brass rod.  Use of tin snips, file, hacksaw and soldering iron.  If the blade isn't thick enough, or the wrong section, it can be built out with wood or plastic laminations and sanded to profile.

This is for Malcolm thanks for reply
The rudder is not for my build of the Sir Lancelot  that rudder is re-done in steel from my friend in Germany,   the rudder that is brocken is of the model slipway boat Loyal class fleet tender.

Have you tried asking if MS can supply a replacement?

Some of the brass rudders available in model shops have the blade retained in the pivot shaft by 2 small rivets.
They are easy to remove with a small punch. a new blade could be cut to shape and drilled to suit from a piece of brass sheet.
2 new rivets made from short lengths of brass wire, inerted through the shaft/blade holes.
They could then be gently peened over by judicious use of a small manual impact tool........hammer!

Wallace, I had the same problem on my MS Loyal Tender.  I first installed the rudder post a bit out of square, which resulted in excess force on the rudder shaft.  I e-mailed Model Slipway, who quickly mailed me a new one (all the way over here in the US).  But then I modified it using short pieces of brass tube and brass rod for better strength.  I also remounted the white metal tapered bushing that glues to the hull, to make things straight.  Check out the picture and PM me if you want to.
