Widening 3mm slots to 4mm
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:53:51 pm »

I have acquired model kit... all the formers have 3 mm slots... but the wood is 4 mm thick. :o

I could have used a file... but can I find a 4 mm wide file..No.... Its not a dimension that anybody quotes.... Length, height but no width :((        Anybody got any ideas?

so...    set up your CNC Router with a 4mm  Diameter cutter, clock your centres on the X-Y axis..    whats your problem?  :} :}

seriously

just make a sanding board of the correct thickness, use scrap 3, 3.25, 3.5mm with a layer of double sided tape and emery cloth and set too :-))  the sand paper tends to be more forgiving than a file and doesn't splinter the wood as much

i have the same problems trying to insert new pieces of ply into my old Aerokits fleet when i am restoring them, and no i haven't found a scource for old imperial unit ply.....   despite what the model shop calls it

Hi Dekan
          Needle files are very thin though I find that wood tends to clog them up I believe you can get Tungsten carbide ones which may be better, but as Dbninja said a sanding board works for me

I have thought of making up a sanding tool, but I thought there might be something else I hadn't thought about out there :}

Permagrit do slot cutters. They are 3mm but be used to open out the slot.
They also do a flat file.
They are in the expotools.com catalogue p44-45

I would try and obtain a round file tapering from less than to more than 4mm. Drill a 4mm hole in a piece of brass to make a collar then force this onto the file. This will automatically stop the file when the slot is 4mm wide. I have used this technique to make identical slots in plasticard - no reason why it should not work on wood, provide it is not too thick and the file is kept unclogged.

As nobody else has asked........just what kit is it that supplies things like this?
Also can you not file the tongue down 1 mill instead of widening the groove 1 mill?
Cheers
