Buying a new Tx
« on: February 16, 2011, 06:13:25 am »

Hi ,
I'm looking to buy a new Tx setup. Cutting through the jargon and hype on reatailers sites is sure tiring.
I don't have any opportunity to see, handle or ask question locally so apart  from manufacturers sites I am trying here, to find some answers.

Considering a Graupner MX-16 iFs Computer Radio System.

Q 1.  " Computer" in this case means what?      Some sets state that in their specs, some don't.

             Also from their specs.
        Set contents:
mx-16 iFS micro-computer synthesizer transmitter with integral NiMH transmitter  battery, XR-16 iFS bi-directional 2.4 GHz iFS receiver, switch harness.
Q 2     " synthesizer " in the case of 2.4 Ghz means what?
Q 3.     " íntegral" Means what?     The usual rechargable behind a panel for easy swapping
                                                     or some sinister exotic setup?
                   ------------------------------------------
Also looking at a         Futaba 6EXP 2.4 Ghz Radio Control.
                                      ( no mention of 'computer')
Noticed a few on Mayhem having trouble setting a neutral point with this set.
Q 4 .    Is that inherent with this set?  Or has the trouble been an Esc.
Q 5.     The throttle 'failsafe'   is/can be/ isn't , a problem  in use or setting up a throttle.
Q5.      Photos of sets on sites, show both sticks centred. Off the shelf, out of the box they come with a ratcheted throttle or centre sprung?
I've noticed people chasing springs to set up sticks to center. With my old Hitec I simply removed a ratchet bar and tensioned up a spring. Done.   This is not the case with a new Futaba or any set for that matter?  In which case if ordering a Futaba I should include getting a centering attachment spring?
Any help or comments clearing up these questions will be appreciated.

                          Bas.

Q1) Computer as in the TC is programable, everything from basic servo reversing to complicated mixes between channels and all computer set these days have an LCD screen to moniter the goings on.

Q2) iFS in Graupner Speak is intelligent frequency select, their varient of frequency hopping - the same way that Specktrum have DMS2 and Futaba has FAAST. All happens automatically.

Q3) integral as in it comes with a battery back. There is a back panel. Battery is a 2000mAH unit rather than the tiny 700mAh you tend to find in Futaba sets tough, so unlikely to run out of juice at the pond.

I'll leave the 4.5.6 for somene with a Futaba TX.

BTW the computer and ease of programming on the Graupner MX-16 is way better than the basic Futaba sets (6EX).

Bas - I don't know if you're aware, but the Graupner IFS system is essentially the Extreme Power Systems radio system - it's just rebadged and sold under the Graupner name.  There's a lot of info about that system here - http://www.rcgroups.com/xtreme-power-systems-483/  There used to be a great deal of negative feeling about the system, but a lot of that seems to have dried up now, following firmware updates etc.  Make your own decision about IFS, but you should know that Graupner now have their own 2.4 system and don't seem to be promoting IFS as vigorously these days.

Thanks  Mankster.
On the button.  There is a lot of XXXX speak out there and over the years , I haven't kept up with changes and trends so starting from scratch re: jargon etc.

Aeronut4 thanks.  No I wasn't aware but then who knows what rebadging goes on.  I can only go with peoples' experience with makes and models. I'm trying to avoid junk Chinese. Yes , hard I know. But prefer to buy proven makes with some sort of backup.

Having said that, Xtal sets have certainly proven themselves when you consider the hundreds of thousands worldwide that have been in use. I think a market from those set will still be around for some time.  So I may just stay with that system.

From the above , you can see, I'm still  ......no no no, not confused.    Undecided, what I'm after.

Okay ,confused.                       Thanks Guys....................Bas

Not quite about EXtreme Power Systems. All Graupner Radio's are build by/based on JR electronics so they are top quality stuff. Graupner hower does the programming and software and devised their own 2.4ghz system (IFS - developed by XtremePS) independent of JR. After the JR tie up with Specktrum (both using DMS but JR concentrating on High end radio and Specktrum on the lower end) they discontinued thier eqivalent of the MX-16 (something like the JR X2610). So XPS do the 2.4Ghz bit and the physical radios are by Graupner/JR.
