KK I have graupner smokers in mine - I was told the 12 volt system is very good - unfortunately my boat electrics are 6 volt and I had to fit 2 side by side down the funnel and it does the job
well except it came out in smoke rings so i fitted a small computor fan which made it look very realistic and took some of the hot air away from the motors 2 x 6v smokers were about £25
not sure of the cost of the 12 volt system.

A lot depends on the boat it is to be used in.  What is good for a 7 foot long destroyer would sink a 30 inch long trawler, what works well in Model Slipway Puffer would go unnoticed in a 1:32 Tug.

you need to go oil based as water based ones will usuly not work very well with small dia tubes that the boats will have that you want it for.

I find the Hunter Systems smoke unit very good but it does need 12 volts and best with a small computor fan (Maplins) behind it. It then gives loadsa smoke .

Why not buy a Pond Mister off Ebay should cost less than a Fiver inc pnp. there 24v dc and take less than 1 amp. Use of a computer
fan 12v run from your esc will give variable effect. this should also enable you to use smallish tubes. Worth a try John.

You won't be able to use tubes of less that 8mm with pond mister type smoke generators, in reality 10mm is probably the smallest you can go......

Has anyone tried the Heng Long tank systems? They are cheap (ish) and run on 7.2V (or 6V, I suppose).

I have one but am not sure where to load the smoke oil! Any ideas?

Hi
You fill the Heng Long units by squirting oil down the exhaust pipes BUT you must be very carefull to only add a small amount, too much and you will drown the unit and it wont heat up enough to give any smoke, unless you are very lucky it will never work again ! They are also rather noisy.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. It is for a small model tug, a 1:48 TID, so it will probably be ok!

I'm scratch building mine and having a lot of fun doing so. The max displacement of 2.5lbs, if I've got my maths right, might be a bit of a 'challenge'. My last model was 25lbs so this requires a slightly different mindset and probably not so many bricks as ballast.  :}
