Don't cut the wires your expensive BEC type ESCs. Buy a short servo extention for a couple of quid and cut the wires on them. This will future proof them should you wish to use them in another model.

[Roadrunner]

Not thats its not a bad tip, but why would you cut the BEC/data leads on an esc in the first place? if you need to have more reach on the lead use a standard servo extension cable.

Only time i see that its worth cutting the lead down is if there is a break in the cable and you have managed to locate it to fix..

If your trying to stop the BEC function just un-clip the central wire (yellow/orange) from the plug and wrap it with some black tape or heat shrink.

I didn't want to do anything with the ESCs as this may void the warrenty

Centre wire is normally red

If your using two speed controllers you need to disable one of the BECS

[wartsilaone]

You,re not getting the point i was trying to make which is, Why ruin something that may cost as much as £30 when for £2 more you can have what is effectively an adapter and you will have more options when configuring your radio setup.

[Mankster]

Or get a marine ESC that has a jumper that disables the BEC.

[wartsilaone]

Yes it does depend on the make. My Mtronics ESCs don't have a switch that disables the BEC function. You get what you pay for!

[Peter]

Why can't a good, simple piece of advice be accepted for what it is?

I agree with Wartsilaone on this method, but at the end of he day, it is only another option that others may not have thought of.

The first thing I do to most of my ESC, is cut the power switch off, and solder a plug on the ends.
This way, the BEC is disconnected if need be, however, I usually solder a long wire onto the switch, then
mount it somewhere on deck and plug it back in.  The wires have to be cut to put plug, and then run a
lead to where I want my switch anyway.

As for extending the receiver lead, it is cheaper to clip it and solder in an extra length of wire than to buy
a servo extension lead for $6.00...

[Peter]

I don't think that the original point was to extend the lead.

It was simply a suggestion of method of disabling the BEC without affecting the original ESC wiring.

I use a tiny screw driver (just like Dave show's on his link) to remove the center wire from the plug , it can then be replaced if needed , even the manufacturers wont notice what you have done.
As for the servo extention leads , yes they are a good idea but where are you guys buying them from £2.00/ $6.00  ,
the last lot i bought from the bay worked out at 20p each , and i have not had one out of the batch of 50 fail .
