Patent Slipway
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:21:32 pm »

Hi guys

I am after some photos of the patent slip
specifically i am after images of the slip as it would have appeared at the time the ST Cervia was on it.
Also what was used to haul the Cervia up the slip it appears to be blocks of timber of some form but
what are these actually
and an image of the slip with cervia on it

S.T. Cervia undergoing some repairs on Morton's Patent Slipway,
at Ramsgate Royal Harbour, January 1977.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ramsgate No.1 Slipway
Ramsgate Harbour, Ramsgate, Kent
associated engineer
Not known
date  1838
era  Victorian  |  category  Docks/Slipway  |  OS grid reference  TR384647
ICE reference number  HEW 1321
A working slipway constructed in 1838 to improve the repair capability of John Smeaton's 18th century harbour. The design follows Morton's patent.
The ramp is 40ft wide and measures 300ft above low water, sloping at 1:16. It is constructed from granite blocks and topped with three sets of double rails, 11ft apart. Along these runs a wheeled cradle which can bear weight of up to 500tons.
The cradle was originally worked by a manual capstan but this has been replaced with an electrically driven winch.

It could possible be that or any of these, im not sure if there is a way to find out, possible if someone who worked there may be able to shed more light on the subject.

One of the very few repair yards left on the Tyne just happens to be of the "slipway" sort. As the "yard" is in South Shields, I had to take this from the North Shields side, about half a mile or so away.

Since the demise of the vehicle carrying ferries plying their trade between the two and never to be joined towns on opposite banks of the Tyne we've had numerous incarnations of ferries. None of which seemed to have worked very well. The late and not lamented "Freda Cunningham" (the boat, you understand, not the person) was a bit of a disaster. Certainly kept the old slipway in business. Then they came up with the "Shieldsman". She was interesting....if not exactly reliable. But she was (in my mind) a pretty thing. Apparently she was propelled by Voith Shneider units. Sandy Thompson of TMBC made a lovely model of her....but even he couldn't get the units to work properly! (photo attatched).
Personally, I wouldn't have called something not much bigger than a pleasure boat "Pride Of The Tyne"....the river deserves better than that. But again, she keeps the slipway busy.
