Dead SLA Battery
« on: April 21, 2011, 10:51:06 am »

Hi Guys
Something I have never come across before.
I bought two new 12V 7Ah batteries from a reputable model supplier at a show last year, end of season.
Used one once and seemed OK. Refresh charged using my Pro Peak charger through the winter, again
seemed OK taking very little charge.
Went to fire up to take advantage of the weather, motor would not run, not a twitch.
Battery voltage 12.14V, applied load voltage 0, yes zero.
Tried to charge and the battery will not take any current at all, tried three different types of charger too.
On an unregulated plug in the wall type it shows 16V but no current.
I surmise that the internal resistance has gone through the roof.
Never had this happen before, I will stick to battery suppliers rather than model suppliers in future.
Cheers

Mark,

Is the other battery OK? Where were the batteries stored over the winter?

Is the battery still under warrenty? You certainly have maintained it, so have grounds for complaint. Point out
to the supplier that the other battery is fine. John.

Hi Guys
Batteries stored side by side in the spare bedroom over winter so no worries over temperature extremes.
Did a discharge test on the second battery yesterday and seems OK, being recharged now.
As for supplier, when you are at a show and the cash gets handed over you don't always get a receipt.
It is therefore difficult to prove where and when you bought the item, and by the time postage is
paid on a fairly heavy item it's probably not worth the effort.
Just chalk it up to experience.
As I said before I will stick to specialist suppliers from now on.
I posted this because in many years of using SLA's I have never seen this before, has anyone else?

Cheers

Mark my good lady borrowed one of my 12v batteries which I use on a minkota electric engine when I'm flyfishing
and stuck it on an electric fence in the horse field.  she ran in down to 2v and never let on. I tried to re-charge it but no joy,
obviously wouldn't hold a charge, but it did get a reading for  few minutes.  I have only once heard of no reading on a battery
after it had been charged and it was a straightforward break in the circuit namely a damaged terminal.  This is what it
sounds like here.  I assume you have checked whether the terminal posts are in any way loose. Definitely  a dustbin or recycle job
