Mark, friends and I have made several using pieces of ceramic material salvaged from disused old household LPG (Propane/Butane) heaters. I buy jets and jet holders from Mike at Maccsteam and then make the burner casing myself. It has taken lots of experimenting to get them to work well and unfortunately what works on a small boiler will not neccessarily work on a bigger boiler. The size and number of primary air holes and of secondary air holes and the relationship between the two is very important as is the jet size and the distance between the jet and the burning surface. You can fine tune by moving the jet in or out but this will not fix problems caused by the other things being incorrect. Burners for underneath pot boilers or loco type boilers are different again. There have been some articles on how do do it in Model Boats and other mags and I will look some out over the weekend and post details. If neccessary I could get them scanned and send them to you. In conclusion is it worth the trouble? - probably not, you can buy really good products that will work well at a reasonable cost from the likes of Maccsteam and Forrest Cllassics but you do have fun doing it if you like experimenting. Cheers, Ian.
