Come to Surrey Park in Melbourne
Not only did the local council encourage model boats and construct the old quarry as a model boat lake, they are assisting in the extension of the club house!!!  %%
There are several members with steam. The area they set up in is fenced off from the public for safety.

Yes it does seem that the councils are losing the plot / hooby idea. If you look on some older maps (up and down the country) a lot of these waters are marked as "Model Boating Lake".........but it seems now...ur not for model boats...grrrrrrrr    >>:-(

Great pictures

No legal expert, but if they have been designated there may be room to appeal. If so it would still need someone/club willing to take it to court.

Back to the suggestion that the local club might have 'poisoned' the council's attitude. Are they affiliated to the MPBA? Have they looked at the mission statement on the MPBA website recently? It is also likely that their club constitution has a similar generic statement - most clubs do.

The photos and postcards are fascinating. Today that would not be tolerated as you can see that some children are " Armed with long sticks" and the Cub in the first picture almost certainly was carrying a clasp knife, as would most of the other boys. Also non supervision so close to open water and children playing alone without Police protection, never do, far too dangerous. Also the model boats were constructed from wood, could be sharp splinters, no one is wearing safety goggles or gloves and that steam boiler  looks home built, Test certificate? Maybe everyone had more common sense in those days.

The photographer would almost certainly be apprehended for taking photos of children

Since my last post on this subject, a friend of mine contacted the local paper, the upshot of which was a visit from a national press agency, who came and took photos of myself and my as yet unfinished Krick Anna. The reporter informed me that he had spoken to local authorities, who informed him that as there was no byelaw in force, the steam boat ban at the lake was unenforcable as no laws were being broken. A minor victory for common sense! The story has now been taken up by one of the major Sunday papers, so I await its publication with baited breath. :-))

'Tis the New Brighton lake, although I believe Hoylake has the same silly rules.

But is it Local Council Stupidity if  a local "Expert" informs the council that there is a potential problem.
Most Councils will ban in the interim in case of a problem, then hopefully research more fully or not.

My mates letter to the local paper seems to have caused quite a reaction locally, for those interested, have a look at the Wirral Globes website, www.wirralglobe.co.uk or google 'wirral model steamboat ban' loads of positive comments, and even mentioned on the Thames Sailing Club website. :-))
