DEANS MARINE COMPASS ROSE
« on: April 04, 2011, 05:21:23 pm »

My maiden voyage in the Mayhem Forum.  :-))

I have, in the view of many people, wasted my life modelling railways but with retirement imminent I am looking to expand my modelling horizons and have been looking at taking up model boating again.  I say again however it was about 10 years ago my son expressed an interest in a rc boat and after much thought he settled on a 37" Precedent Perkasa.  Simple glassfibre hull and wooden uppers which was ideal for him at the time and between us we built it and sailed and it is on a shelf behind me as I type this e-mail.  What is more we got it substantially correct first time in that even with just a single prop it will sit up and race through the water just as my son wanted it to. :}

So I am not a complete novice and my years of railway modelling mean that I am not fazed by the construction of the kit, with or without plans, ill fitting porly designed parts etc as these are challenges railway modellers have to deal with as well.  My main concerns are in the motor / prop / servos etc department but with one boat under my belt that works [beginners luck] I know that a disaster probably awaits me on boat number 2. :((

So the question is what to build.   Warships are my first love though boat 3 will probably be a small coaster.  Kits under scrutiny are Deans Marines HMS Compass Rose, HMS Amethyst, HMS Javelin or the Caldercraft Sir Kay.  Given my experience should I possibly avoid any of these kits?

Thanks Malcolmmac

Hello welcome to Mayhem. All should go well with your next build. If not then a question will bring a quick
answer. Possibly visting or joining your local Boat club would help you expand your knowledge. There is
often different ways of doing things. Good luck, best wishes . John.

Many thanks for your support.  If the guys on this forum are as helpful as the guys on my model railway forum then I have nothing to fear.

Hi Malcolm
I have made both the Amethyst and the Javelin and they make great models.
Instructions and drawings can be a bit vague but we on Mayhem can always help out.

DICKYD

Ah you are the chap to blame!  It was those photos which helped me narrow down the number of possible builds.  Excellent looking models and if I can get mine to look anything like your two I'll be over the moon.

Thanks

Hi Malcolmmac. Further to our conversation this evening I am sure which ever kit you decide to build, you will have no problems with either. This members of this site are always willing to help out with any problems you may have. If you can contact your local club this will pays dividends in the future and the savings in time and money will be well worth any club membership fees. Wishing all the best with your new project.
